it's so bad that the only translation of the Red Book of Westmarch is garbage. what do you mean you changed Bilba Labingi's name to "Bilbo Baggins." who authorized you to do that

My cats always end up with many weird nicknames, and Kether is no exception. She's prone to wandering into view from unexpected directions, and I've fallen into the habit of greeting her with "Hey, cat" when she does so.

It is the very essence of being 64 years old that I am really excited that today I replaced the old battered side-table lamps in my living room with two of these beauties. It's rather nice having my ambitions finally falling into alignment with my capabilities. 🙂

porn is so deeply misogynistic. i just watched a video with dozens of performers going at it, and they literally hadn’t bothered to hire a single woman.

There are currently two hurricanes ~1800 km south of me, separated by ~500 km. These are the second and third to affect Southern California this season. Another happened in 2023. Only two others have occurred since records started in the mid-19th century.

I just finished reading the novel _Blindsight_ by Peter Watts. I already stayed up too late because I had to find out how it ended. Now I'm torn between going to bed versus staring into space for an hour or so trying to figure out what just happened to me. This book is going to leave a mark.

I don't know how to explain it, but orcs aren't real. Obviously, I don't believe in goblins and elves, but I REALLY don't believe in orcs. They're just something that was invented by a famous fantasy writer, like transphobia.

Yes, distancing yourself from (and seeking allies against) a powerful neighbor that has repeatedly threatened your sovereignty is the very definition of "spite". It reminds me of Ukraine's spiteful decision to seek international assistance in dealing with Russia.

In a successful society, those are all willing sacrifices. Sure, people grumble, but at heart most people consider the social contract to be a fair bargain. When that stops being the case, you get what we're going through now.
