sorry for doing an earnest post on top of a good joke but I never even knew Argentina was famous for sheltering Nazis because my family spoke so glowingly about how after my great-grandfather fled Poland, he found safety and so many other Jews in Buenos Aires

my great uncle was a jew in the french army who escaped from lisbon to BA and became a journalist and diplomat. after 1944 it was the nazis that needed a new start in the outer colonies.

When I law clerked at the UN in Geneva, I was shocked by how many delegates from South America had German or Italian last names. When I commented on it, my French friend was like “Think about it real hard for a minute.”

Every nationality, even people from distinct areas of Europe settled in different places. There are a few German/Austrian towns and others where you will, for example, only find Piedmont or Galician heritage. They came with all their baggage but mainly with ambition and to live in relative peace.

In Sweden visiting my wife's family and after a hike this evening my brother-in-law put on a radio show that coincidentally was (best I could tell with my limited Swedish) about Jewish survivors of WWII who'd moved to Argentina trying to keep Yiddish alive there.

My grand uncle had a similar story, survived Auschwitz, spent 3 decades in Buenos Aires ,and ended up as an Argentine wine importer in Baltimore.

My grandfather in-law spent much of WWII in Argentina hunting Nazis, while he was working for the FBI.

My Jewish great grandfather came here from Poland too, way before the war. The rest of the people in his village did not, though. None of them survived the war and it's afternaths.
