I don't want to live in a meritocracy. I want to live in the world where you'll be ok even if you don't have an iota of talent in your body.

You’d think the so-called pro-life people would get this.

Also, let’s dispense with the “capitalism is a meritocracy” myth? The richest man in the world is a completely useless racist sexist moron who has invented nothing and whose business success is entirely dependent on taxpayer handouts. Obviously it’s not a meritocracy.

it's pure luck how capable and in what family one is born. with meritocracy, there's a very high chance that life is determined from the very first day. and that isn't just for less fortunate people.

"from each according to their abilities, to each according to their need," is one of the best things i ever heard

And we see that perfectly in the administration's choices to lead government departments. Not an iota of talent in sight.

It's too often forgotten that Michael Young wrote The Rise of the Meritocracy as a cautionary satire not a blueprint.

Talent don't do shit. You can be the most gifted but walk a diverging path, never find out, or ruin it by being a bad person. You can be "talented" at something that isn't your passion and get questioned about it for your whole life or become a one-trick-pony. Honestly, talent sounds like a lie.

You want your doctor to be competent (but: there's no point in having a PhD to cure a paper cut), but you mostly want the less fortunate not to be forgotten/dismissed. I wonder if the problem you refer to might be more a consequence of uncorrected capitalism than competence based ranking.

Your best bet is meritocracy, if that's what you want, because only meritocracy produced enough of a surplus to keep all the parasites fed.

Agreed, but I don’t want the least talented/deserving ending up at the top of the food chain.

Honestly, not everyone is born gifted or ambitious, and it shouldn’t have to be a fight just to be okay. A world where people are valued simply for being human sounds a lot more livable.

The problem is that everyone has talent but this modern world values only money and the ability to fist fight to the death. The talent someone may have to be able to calm souls with song or stories, or to exude love and nurturing compassion are deemed talentkess which is why the modern world's sick

If you start from the premise that every human soul has dignity and is worthy of respect, then what you suggest is the only logical conclusion. Unfortunately, nobody in a position of power these days starts from that premise.
