September 28, 2026, 5:28 pm EDTSince the student demonstrations, Columbia has ramped up safety personnel and services.

The Columbia Daily Spectator, the university's student paper, reported in early 2025 that a university Senate poll found 62% of surveyed students would feel "very com-fortable" if their Morningside campus were reopened, with swipe access to buildings, while 16% felt "somewhat comfortable" and 11% were neutral. Student protests had subsided by then, but pro-Palestinian activism continued.

Some students still feel uneasy. On a recent day, a couple of students from Israel on campus said that the closed gates have helped them feel more secure and that the changing political circumstances warrant keeping them closed.

What he told everybody inside the company was that he was tired of the administrative part of the job. He hated earnings calls. He hated five-year plans. There was also a lot of complaining about his compensation, that it was inadequate relative to others in the industry.

But I have had plenty of people suggest to me that there was a small group of people that knew Covid was coming before the rest of the world. And certainly, given the magnitude of what was about to happen, the idea of laying off or furloughing 110,000 people was not consistent with what some people would want their public image to be.

I don't have any reason to know whether that's true or not true. [Iger told the New York Times in 2020 that there were no hidden reasons for his retirement.]

Everyone involved with promoting AI is deeply anti-worker and therefore anti-human, and should be resisted and pushed back at every turn
As one executive at a major AI company explained to me, "AI is going to fundamentally shift the balance of power between labor and capital, so only capital will matter. Now is the time to secure your time-slice of the universe." Another version of that statement I've heard repeated by various friends of mine who are freshly out of college: There are only five years left to make money, so I have to get it now.

TikTok deliberately turned off safety features to 15 million US users and force fed suicide content to a 16 year old, who then killed himself
The internal document was written after questions from Businessweek in 2023 about why the algorithm was serving Chase's account nonstop suicide content a year after his death. Titled "Bloomberg Busi-nessweek, Youth Safety & Filter Bubbles: Escalation Summary," it reveals details about an experiment the company ran that withheld a safety feature designed to break up echo chambers of harmful content, or "filter bubbles," from 10% of US users. At the time, that was about 15 million people. One of them was Chase.
