Pavel @spavel.bsky.social · 17/07/2025If Microsoft/Google/Meta employs so many expensive people, why are their products so bad? People might answer "enshittification", as though it means "when things are shit" which it doesn't ⸻ the real reason is that as an organization gets bigger, managing the organization takes up more of the work. 1419715
Saeed Khan @saeedwkhan.bsky.social · 27/07/2025"Bad" is a relative and contextual term. Bad from a design perspective? Sure. Bad from an engagement, usage, revenue perspective? Not really. Their goals are revenue, profit, engagement etc. If that is achieved, even if the design/usability are "bad", they will do it. I'm not defending them BTW. 110
Lev Mirov @thelionmachine.bsky.social · 01/05/2026Weird tangent question but I thought enshittification meant "the deliberate choice of a company to pursue Shit that makes the user experience worse" eg google deciding what we all really want is an ad when we search for something. Their perceived added value is my experience of it being shitty. 110
wheelyweb 🇨🇦🇮🇹🇦🇺 @wheelyweb.bsky.social · 17/07/2025Who hurt you, Pavel? This is the first time I’ve seen a 27-nest post in here. It got so narrow that it could only fit one word on a line at a time. Top notch observations though. It does explain a lot! Fells like a product picnic in the works. Or maybe even a book! 100
B @brandononearth.bsky.social · 17/07/2025As stated in the cut song “Biggering” from the Illumination classic The Lorax(2012): “I must keep biggering I'm figgering on biggering Though biggering is triggering more biggering I won't stop biggering I'm figgering on biggering And biggering is triggering more biggering” 000
Pavel @spavel.bsky.social · 17/07/2025All the big tech companies have reached a point where *most* of the work that happens in the company is managing the organization. The trouble is that the prestige of managing rises in proportion to the amount of managing being done, until the org values management more than actually doing the work! 3925

Andy Pearce 🇬🇧👨🏻💻 @andy-pearce.com · 17/07/2025In tech, success at scale in the long-term generally leads to a build up of technical debt and legacy systems, no matter how aggressively you invest in keeping these things under control. So even ignoring the rest of the org, more engineering time is consumed by simply keeping the lights on. (1/2) 130

Michel Floyd @michelfloyd.bsky.social · 27/07/2025As companies get bigger their focus turns from building products that please their users to building products that please their shareholders. This behavior is usually protected by high switching costs. 000
greta garblghhhh @ipnotica.bsky.social · 17/07/2025In Microsoft’s case, firing contractors or FTEs devoted to testing the UI through actually using it and only using SDEs/SDETs did not help. Dogfooding AI productivity tools doesn’t seem to be helping alongside. 120
🍂🎃 henh? 🎃🍂 @circularsoul.bsky.social · 17/07/2025part of enshittification is taking the decision making power out of those smart people and moving it to people whose only priority is making the most amount of money for shareholders possible 240
