The betrayal of the Kurds stands out for me as the worst betrayal of an ally. I wouldn’t vote for Bush again. It was unforgivable.

It's a very convincing explanation of the pattern. It's a plan that always hurts other people and not us. It always "works." When it was actually successful, in Afghanistan, that was even worse than the failures.

The answer is the US has never ever given a fuck about the rights or freedoms of anyone, much less a bunch of people thousands of miles away. Its all a ruse. The real goal has ALWAYS been securing national interests in foreign regions, whatever they may be.

Very good - I wonder if another side lies with protest movements. The more exposed they become, the more inclined to believe rhetoric. The shift from canny to desperate may not be obvious to US policymakers missing they are now being taken at their word by people who didn't blithely do that before.

One more anecdote might be the June 1953 uprising in East Germany. RFE also urged on the protesters even though no help was ever planned. Less high profile than Hungary but preceding it by a few years. (Reading the rest of the article now. Thanks for the gift link!
