Folk practice and belief is so much messier and weirder and more interesting than folks make it when they try to apply a very modern sense of purity and systems to people who had ever shifting junk drawers full of One Weird Trick beliefs.

I recently did a whole cultural consultancy gig about modern witchcraft and it's wild the stuff you have to unpack and most all of it in an american context comes from the second great enlightenment period riding off the spiritualist revival.

The purity and systems work for complex biology, e.g. a lizard can't mate naturally with a dog bc their ancestors divided millions of years ago. But human traditions and languages can absolutely rejoin each other generations later. Maybe we get human systems mixed up with biological one...?

Having read a copy of the long lost friend, it’s fascinating how it mixes prayers/talismans with folk cures (some of which may even work), and then randomly will be like “here’s a recipe for molasses substitute if you’re out”
