George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 06/01/2026Please remember, there's no perfect system. Yes, renewables cause damage, but it is far, far smaller per MWh than the damage caused by fossil fuels. Yes, there are some dirty interests associated with clean power, but ditto. Yes, we need to limit our energy demand. But we still need sources. 430948
George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 06/01/2026Many of those who complain about mining for batteries / solar / wind power have curiously never raised a squeak about the far greater extraction required for fossil energy. Funny how they become concerned about the planet only when fossil fuel interests are threatened. 1446783
Tim Hill of Antifa, #FBPE @tjrh.uk · 06/01/2026Those complainers have obviously never taken a close look at satellite images of the Permian Basin in West Texas and New Mexico. What a mess! 120
Dan Brown @snaphookdan.bsky.social · 06/01/2026Exactly this - they treat fossil fuel extraction as some sort of benign process with no environmental impact. 000
Todd De Ryck @tder2012.bsky.social · 07/01/2026Same with people concerned about nuclear waste, 400,000 tons globally in 50+ years, no one killed or injured, all contained & accounted for. Coal waste is not contained & 400,000 tons produced globally every 30 minutes, perspective @theecologyprof.bsky.social toddderyck.substack.com/p/its-only-w...toddderyck.substack.com"It's Only Waste if We Waste it"Potential options for "nuclear waste" 010
Marsanges @marsanges.bsky.social · 06/01/2026Specifically, nuclear energy implies a bit of mining for uranium in Europe, which i wonder about whether the nuclear proponents support that too. I'm a geologist, i have nothing against mining. But honestly mining for REE is way more interesting. 100
David @storybridge.bsky.social · 09/01/2026In Australia, we had a politician on TV resistant to action on climate change note that solar power panels from China could be made by slave labour. And what of the many other products made by slaves or do they only care when it relates to something that they don’t like, renewable energy. 110
Bhav @bhavkhatri.bsky.social · 06/01/2026I think there is an argument in the relative merits of battery storage Vs hydrogen storage, where the latter the electrolysers and fuel cells have a lower mineral impact. 000
John Lin @itsjohns.network · 06/01/2026For example, the cat majority of the world's cobalt is not used for batteries but instead for thermal energy production and drilling. 100
joczechowska.bsky.social @joczechowska.bsky.social · 06/01/2026Or suddenly worry about birds flying into wind turbines when they never cared about wildlife before. 080
Drawn @commoner.bsky.social · 06/01/2026That's because we're not saying it's all down the those two options, we're saying we have to reduce... something you won't even countenance. But that is why you get a platform to spread your gospel. 000
George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 06/01/2026The same goes for people who express a new-found concern for the poor when an energy transition beckons. They attempt this gambit even today, when renewables are cheaper than fossil fuels. In reality, such people couldn't give a damn about the planet, or poverty. They are concern trolls. 129642
ClimateDad @dad-climate.bsky.social · 06/01/2026Re: batteries chinese battery maker CATL has just started large scale production of sodium batteries. They look good and are unaffected by cold. Particularly suitable for energy grid storage but good for transport too. 120
