Burnham's speech was moving & well crafted. He said a lot of the right things diagnosing the roots of problems due to neoliberalism which deindustrialised the economy & privatised basic services. Yet, fiscal rules are a form of neoliberalism and you can't fix the country on the cheap!! #r4today

This is real leadership. Day by day the right criticise effectiveness of UN, all while they act to undermine it. Through "selfishness, ignorance & cruelty" they want to take us "back to a dark past". As Sanchez says to start we should abolish the anachronistic security council veto!

The witch hunt continues and I'm pretty shocked the @theguardian.com did not mention the parallels to how Jason Arday was persecuted. To be clear I've no idea whether this author plagiarised anything — the point is whether he is getting this scrutiny because he is black. #racism

If Matt Brittin—new head of BBC—really wants BBC to be antidote to misinformation of tech giants then he needs to 1st look inwards. BBC does not strive for impartiality it strives to defend status quo, like on economics where it only presents a classical/neoliberal view of gov spending. #bbclaurak

In many ways Andy Burnham is refreshing & talks with heart compared to previous PMs. However, ludicrousness of situation is BoE pays commercial banks about £20 Billion per year on their clearing accounts at BoE. No other country does this & this would pay for social care. #bbclaurak

Btw El-Erian didn't mention investing in the climate transition in what could be included in the growth plan. Bond markets want growth that prioritises private wealth and financialisation. It is all about who is able to control for who the economy works. #r4today

EL-Erian saying we need a growth plan. Ok fine, but I think he is being disingenuous. Any growth plan will take time to act & the traders and hedge funds that consist bond markets only have interest in short term returns & i suspect are ideologically driven to reduce the size of the state! #r4today

I agree with Nick! On this issue! The way these AIs are constructed as correlation machines trained on huge amounts of data, so they aren't self aware in any way. The real danger is humans using these for malicious aims and poorly designed guard rails . #r4today

Head of IMF is smoking something as she states governments around world "don't have cash" & warns against higher debt levels. Problem is people in charge of IMF & BoE ultimately prioritise interests of private wealth over broad societal progress, using classical economic models as cover. #r4today

Future historians of 21st century will wonder how we let things get so bad. Imagine an analogy where humanity's an individual walking slowly into a fire & despite increasing heat collective decision making of this brain is unable to stop the motion! Bond markets won't save us from #climatechange
The graphic is a plot of temperature data over the course of one year from Pacific Ocean, showing the compounding effect of human made climate change and El Niño: we see the red curve — representing the temperature data for this year to date — giving rise the most rapid increase in Pacific ocean temperatures since records in 1982, reaching the previous highest peak anomaly temperature of 3degs C in Sept, about 2 months earlier than previous record years of 1997 and 2015.

The rise of the far right in Germany is as a result of self-imposed austerity (debt break) — and this is despite Germany traditionally having a trade surplus with the world. This is arguably even more economically stupid compared to Tory austerity in UK, since we have trade deficit! #r4today

The BBC needs to do better on economics: 1) 14 years of austerity show it doesn't work, yet they keep giving a massive mouthpiece to those who think we need more cuts 2) Gov debt is not debt. Govs are not contained like households. Yet everyday we get debt scaremongering from the BBC #bbclaurak

FFS again Zanny from Economist is pushing only one view of economy—which is neoliberal. Cutting spending (austerity) is exactly why we are in a mess: do these guys have the collective memory or a gold fish! Govs need to spend to stimulate the economy and for long term growth! #bbclaurak

Bank CEOs have been out in full force warning Burnham and Healey not to tax their windfall profits in the Budget. But do any of their threats hold water? We tell @labourlist.bsky.social why the case for a windfall tax on bank profits is stronger than ever 👇

The choice is clear – allow a sector that neglects the UK while profiting from the public to continue as it is or tax banks’ profits.

Interview with Sunaks previous economic advisor was so matter of fact, yet it hides that 1) BoE can always be purchaser of gov bonds should market focus solely on their short term gains Vs long term prosperity of UK 2) their bond sell off program (QT) is ideological and costing UK gov #r4today

Single individuals donating millions to political parties is corrosive to democracy.. However—shockingly—I agree with Tice on BoE: they shouldn't do quantitative tightening—which contributes to higher bond yields—& they shouldn't paying interest to banks on their balance sheets at BoE #r4today

I'm not saying there isn't a risk, but to be clear current AIs are not conscious with human-like motivation—they do not have the survival instinct & need to procreate that we & many animals have evolved over millions of years, which lead us to to take malicious actions for our survival. #bbclaurak

Let the ultra rich go to avoid tax: we don't need people siphoning off wealth & not give back. Wider problem is narrative that gov can't spend that 100odd million in tax when they leave—they can! Purpose of tax is to control inflation, but taxes aren't needed for gov to spend! #r4today

We need a strong voice in parliament to challenge Andy Burnham on the climate, infrastructure spending & borrowing: there's no way Burnham can enact change needed with neoliberal fiscal rules. Govs must spend on long term problems as cost of inaction is far greater than reaction of bond markets.
