George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 31/03/20254. Instead, in most cases, it's a. tree planting. b. tree planting. c. tree planting. It doesn't seem to matter how many times ecologists speak to government on this issue, there's a path-dependency at work that resists all challenge. 1727221 272
George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 31/03/20255. A big part of the problem, ironically, is that natural regen is much cheaper/free, so there's less money to be made from it. There's an industrial lobby which profits from planting grim rows of trees in plastic tubes. There is no industrial lobby profiting from letting nature do its thing. 1734657 346
Bob Owen @etotheipiadd1.bsky.social · 31/03/2025This and it can also be used as green washing. We are planting this many trees per <whatever>, sounds a lot better than we are buying some land and doing nothing with it. 171 7

anlomedad @anlomedad.bsky.social · 31/03/2025Word! I'd want to show @charliejgardner.bsky.social's post to which I reply here bsky.app/profile/anlo... But Charlie hasn't added ALTtext to his image so I can't. He – together with authors of a new NATURE paper – wonder why the BioD COP15 received so much less media attention than climate COP27.anlomedad@anlomedad.bsky.socialCan't throw tech at biodiversity collapse. Hence, it's less attractive for the agenda-setting male decision makers in media. They love recommending tech against CO2 molecules and push the ubiquitous trend to monetize everything.🤑 Your pollinator doesn't come with a price tag? So it's negligible. 💪🕺 120 2
Amy Trewick @sneapster.bsky.social · 31/03/2025It’s hard getting funding for rewilding projects as funders like instant results and things that are all shiny and newsworthy. The other thing is, trees that are planted often die because issues why they weren’t there in the first place aren’t addressed (like high deer population). 100 1
Wolf Baginski @zhochaka.org.uk · 31/03/2025There is also a logistics problem. How long does it take to get from a seed to a tree producing seeds? It's a similar problem to coffee, or apples. And too many politicians think farming is magic. 010 1
El Cid @euclidez.bsky.social · 31/03/2025Now come on George, hope your not discouraging the practice of multiple local species of seed bombs to kickstart natural regeneration? 000 0
Alick Simmons @parliamentarygoose.bsky.social · 31/03/2025There's another influence here; a deeply-embedded cultural imperative to act, to do and to effect change. This has its roots in medieval ditch-digging - perhaps going back to prehistory. The idea that things can take their course is anathema to most land managers and is often unrelated to cost. 2132 13

Guy Harvey (muted Starmer stan) @guyharvey70.bsky.social · 31/03/2025Is it because each tree planted gets on the carbon offset ledger but self-seeded ones don't? Think road schemes. Hundreds of trees (in plastic tubes) line the verges nowadays. 030 3

Steve In Dub @subtronix.bsky.social · 31/03/2025Exactly this! Tree planting can be structured as a business, and profit extracted. Letting land heal/regenerate/be on its own - not so much of a money spinner. 000 0
Dominic Coath @dominiccoath.bsky.social · 31/03/2025I think the problem is more that tree planting is an active process. You can involve people and communities. You're doing something. Grant funders like it. Natural regeneration projects you stick up a fence and walk away. How do communities invest in that? What's the offer? How do we sell it? 150 5
