I am in a grumpy mood. The Ranulph Fiennes story isn't helping — who can anyone trust — and I don't even have distant family who might ask questions. Social care, however much the politicians may shout this week, is feeling as though the slave-traders moved in with pockets full of dodgy cash.

Is it deliberate or not? I have seen videos about "making" a tool which turn out to be about routine use of the tool. It's a "with the tool" video. It may not be the A.I. Slop from an LLM but isn't every search on the internet drowning in a sea of algorithms?

I've been making fast sketches, comic-style, with a brush-pen. Mostly humans. Humans vary, but you do need to have an idea of proportion. How big is their head? Where do eyes and ears go. Vitruvian Man isn't quite real. It's close, but it shows every section being of equal height.

I am overhearing a TV advert for a supplier of mobility aid, ranging from wheelchairs to walking sticks. The company keeps closing branches. The nearest to me is about twice as far away as it was a year ago. The adverts are about the most expensive options, such as carbon fibre for the frame.

One of the ideas somebody has had to please my elderly neighbours is to organise guinea-pig petting sessions. This feels like going back to a long-gone childhood for urban children. My life included quite rural dogs and cats, who knew me. It's a very different feeling. We had conversations.

A4 is a standard paper size in most of the world but, because the USA still uses inches, you need to be careful about buying from eBay or Amazon. I still see flat-sheet magnifiers, A5 size with a handle, sold as A4.

There is a BBC report on the Plan for a Triumphal Arch in Washington. A new part of the plan includes sniper positions and ammunition storage. That's not daft. You could do it for a new building in Trafalgar Square. But this is just loud shouting by You-Know-Who. Why tell everyone?

About 36.000 people, in and around Scunthorpe, are without water supplies today. Anglian Water say two water mains burst, cutting the supply to "Stonewall Reservoir", which feeds water to the whole area. I haven't been able to find this on any map.

BlueSky seemed to have a bit of a glitch around 6am Saturday, as seen from Britain. Roughly a half hour of nothing visible but the blue screen and the white bird. I can't rule out local problems. I can't explain it. I am a bit grumpy after having to deal with a helpdesk over unrelated issues.

It's OK to mourn people you knew. The problem I have with the idea of a "War on Terror" is that you are fighting an amorphous blob. Nothing exists to talk to. "The Troubles" ended because there were people known, and they could talk, make a deal, and stick to it. You-know-who always breaks deals.

This Bear has been trying a cheap, refillable, brush pen. Think fountain pen with a brush rather than a metal nib. It's OK though maybe not for fine work. You may need some scratch paper to get the ink flowing. Not really for watercolour paint or for handwriting.

I run a character in the #SecondLife virtual world. I don't like the people who make snide comments about how my character isn't using the latest, most expensive, of the in-game tech. It's not AI slop, but they seem to expect not make-up but barely healed plastic surgery.

Events in Portsmouth on Sunday night were a right-wing riot trying to stop detained migrants being taken to Prison. Don't assume any special usage of any labels, whether you use British or American English. The migrants were to be taken somewhere government-run that they couldn't just walk out of.

your brain processes sound and sight at different speeds. it resyncs them before handing it to the thinking bit. The "Horizon of Simultaneity" is when you're far enough from something that the diff in the speed light/sound naturally syncs the processing, reducing cognitive load. It's 15m from you.

There is a new set of formal names for big storms every year, always issued today. The Met Office agrees it with Eire and The Netherlands. I expect an outbreak of Blustery Politicians complaining about foreign names being used. I reckon Storm Nigel can be ignored, as usual.

The start and end of Summer can be set by the Solstice and Equinox. For recording some things complete Calendar Months are used. On top of this is the complication of the Formal School Year. As a farmer in England, none of these reliably matched the world I lived in. Today _is_ September.

Various names have been scattered around, and I was prompted by a news media report from 2017 about "Gamergate" to look that up. Accounts in Wikipedia and Brittanica freely identify the targets, while hiding all claims made about the perpetrators, even the loud shouting of MY. Bigotry is routine.

I have one of those USB-powered Cooler Boxes. It can make a difference to a canned drink. Don't call it a refrigerator. I get about 6°C less than ambient. That's a pleasantly cooler drink in a heatwave, nothing significant for storage. Some RL shops and sales sites on the internet are liars.

I reckon a math-puzzle channel on YouTube has gone entirely A.I. The latest puzzle involved a circle inscribed in a square. Each side of the square was marked as 8 units long. The diameter of the circle was 10 units. This is impossible. The solution doesn't need the size of the square.

I have been looking at an August 2026 calendar (again) and I keep missing a critical detail. It's a grid of dates, and the 1st was a Saturday, last space on the top row. To get all the days into the 7x5 grid, the last two days of the month, Sunday and Monday, are the first two cells of the grid.

Most of the malware being thrown at this device is claiming to be notifications from Google, telling me I must click on a provided link to restore the function of my account. I know how to check IP addresses. Is Google really operating from Russia? Is the USA any safer today?
