In 2012 I asked some new service if they have payment options besides credit cards. In 2014 they asked me if I'm interested in using Bitcoin. My answer: “I'm not a drug dealer or something similarly shady. It's just a different credit card culture here in Germany. I'm not interested in Bitcoin.”

Not the whole story. If a cryptocurrency economy were large, a sector of the economy would be beyond any government control. It wouldn't be criminal, but would be subversive. This is probably why Thiel etc are fond of the idea.

More specifically it's avoiding regulation. Note that many crimes, such as buying drugs or gambling worldwide, are not immoral. When laws are just some stupid, scared old men trying to control their reality, it's hard to be on their side.

Crime can be good when it is performed in opposition to a corrupt state. I don’t have much use for it, but i wish i could find that hard disk with my Bitcoin wallet from 2010 when i ran an experimental miner on the largest machine in the research cluster in grad school.
