A part of the struggle about AI is that, almost by definition, we do not know what an AGI will think and do. Moreso when the General intelligence becomes Super intelligence. Some say there is no scientific way to know so why bother? Others point to existential risks and say we must at least try.

Setting expectations of inflation can trigger a short-term buying boom as people make planned purchases before prices go up. The same is true when people expect shortages. In this way, a slowdown may be cloaked by pessimistic forecasts.

In 'theory of mind' we read the minds of others. Assuming they think like us is a common cause of conflict. When there are other aspects, such as gender, ethnicity or nationality, we may add bias and stereotyping.

There's a strange thing in the way we fall down one of two opposing rabbit holes, drink the drink-me, and totally believe we are wholly right and good, and that they are wholly wrong and bad. While we think we know how the others think, we actually can't really imagine it. This is polarization.

Money talks. Always has. Especially in America. Especially in GOP. Especially Trump & Co. Money leads to corruption. So the talk can easily be corrupt. But corruption corrodes trust. Low trust costs. More than we think. This is how America is now in free fall.

Use it or lose it. It's a widely applicable rule for physical and mental abilities. So decide what skills are needed (and not) and focus appropriately. Take into account time and resource needed to gain and sustain skills.

Extraction is a key skill of the powerful. You can do it too. Bootstrap your way to wealth by screwing everyone along the way. Take the max. Give the min. Just don't expect to have real friends. But do expect virulent enemies.

It's not about what you believe but who you believe. Priests, politicians, academics and salespeople, all want blind acceptance of their truths. We don't have time to do original research on everything, so we hang our trust on a selected few. You could even say we're all in one cult or another.

The wealthy consider themselves as a class apart, an aristocracy where power is a right, not a responsibility. In that blind, closed cocoon, it is natural to seek perpetuation, yet power is not wisdom and they miss the necessity of contented masses. Revolution is an old, old lesson.

We numb to the inevitable. This is how dictators condition their populations. It's how we are now facing El Niño. AI is another. We ignore, deny or worship existential threat, fascinatedly elevating it to magical status, while praying our praise will save us. MAGA is an example of such cults.

Social media at the moment is full of complicated explanations about the coming financial crisis. Here's a summary: 1. Borrow money. 2a. Spend some paying back interest. 2b. Spend the rest on things you want. 3. Repeat until 2a uses up all the money from 1. 4. Go bust.

Vance is too transparently Machiavellian. I don't believe he believes anything, so how can I adopt his beliefs? Trump, at least, is credible in his narcissism. This is his lesson to the left: be consistent. They are currently too divided. They are desperately in need of a unifying leader.

Trump preys on fools and fanatics. His bare-faced lies convince them. And then he turns their violence on cautious citizens, ruling by fear of the mob MAGA, of death threats and ICE abduction. He also preys on the powerful, promising untold wealth for their blind support. Watch, learn and resist.

Good people can do bad things. Many seek power, initially to do good, then later for the pleasure of how it feels to hold the future of others in your hands. Personally, the thought horrifies me. While I hope I'd stay true, I can't know what I'd do. I suspect there are many who think similarly.

As those who remember WW2 first hand die, so also dies the determination never to repeat it. With this small but momentous step, AfD took the country significantly closer to the midnight of major conflict again. Notably, AfD is strong in the East, which Russia ran and where Putin worked.

Far-right AfD win in Germany is ‘grave moment’ for Europe, politicians warn
Mainstream politicians express alarm while lead candidate in Saxony-Anhalt welcomes congratulations from Elon Musk * AfD wins key German state election but falls just short of majority Mainstream politicians around Europe have expressed alarm after the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) swept to a historic state election victory in Germany, while nationalist figures cheered the result as a mandate for change. While falling just short of an absolute majority, the AfD surged into first place in the Saxony-Anhalt state election on Sunday, exit polls showed, putting the far right within reach of power at ‌the state level for ‌the first time since the second world war. It's not good to feel like prey. Nor to think it's an option. Some think there's only a binary choice. You are predator or prey, so be a predator. This leads to conflict where both parties are trying to convince the other to be prey. It's better to just step off this game. Be adult. Collaborate.

A key task for Dems rolling up to midterms is *denormalization*. When Trump repeats things then moves on fast before they can be questioned, he is normalizing those things, muting normal emotion. The Dem message must be: "Trump did X. THIS IS NOT NORMAL!" "X happened. THIS IS NOT NORMAL!" etc.

Burnham to say he wants to unlock ‘positivity’ in first statement to MPs since becoming PM – UK politics live
Prime minister will bring upbeat message to adversarial Commons after a summer of policy announcements and improved poll ratings Good morning. Andy Burnham became prime minister six weeks ago, but today will be the first time he addresses MPs in the Commons. It will also be the first time he has spoken as a minister from the dispatch box in more than 16 years. As MPs return to Westminster, they will be telling each other about how they spent the summer holiday and, for Burnham, it has undoubtedly gone well. He has unveiled a blitz of announcements which, broadly, have had a good reception and he has delivered the kiss of life to Labour’s poll ratings. Today Burnham will chair cabinet in the morning and then make a ministerial statement in the Commons after 3.30pm. Normally a prime ministerial statement has a specific focus; it will be about a major policy decision, or a foreign affairs crisis. From the briefing that we have had so far, it sounds as if Burnham’s will be more of a wide-ranging rehash of all the things that he has been talking about this summer. In her preview, Jessica Elgot says he will talk about his intention to bring more essential services back into public control. Continue reading...
