The future of Oxford Street: More space, more trees... and fewer American candy stores.

Definitely more trees and destination shops, and pop ups. I used to have so much fun on Oxford street, the huge music stores, with gigs from international stars, all the best brands had a store along the street, times have changed of course but it can & should still be a great retail street.

OK, but you have to allow the breakfast cereal Apple Jacks into this country, else I will have to turn to the seedy bowl of the black market

Fewer American Candy Stores? One is too many.

Maybe have street 'wardens', someone who knows the area, walks around and when they see one of these shops pop up they can report it to a hotline and get them shut down quickly. May also help by being a visible contact for visitors/tourists who need help getting around.

You're giving Rightwing Rowling more space in the capital‽ She'd deport you in a heartbeat if she could.

How about some awnings instead of bleak cliffs of shop front with no shade or shelter from rain? And how did the monstrosities on the north side near Bond Street station get through the planning stage?

Why have those horrible American 'Candy Stores' been so hard to get rid of? They are so obviously a front for something else and never seem to have shoppers buying anything.

Sweet shops. Not 'candy stores'

More space and trees I'm very in favour of, regardless of the number of confectioners' shops

Pedestrian only streets are nice. A section of pedestrian only street in Mexico City at night (around midnight for Independence celebration, La Grita) and during the daytime. Metropolitan Cathedral ahead and to the left.

Lots of people heading to the Zocalo for La Grita, to celebrate Mexico's independence, close to midnight. Zocalo featured in this James Bond film, https://youtu.be/f2EJQedOXi0?si=itlQJXNcszt98Vi4

A couple pushing a baby stroller, a guy with a man bun walking his dog and reading messages on his phone, women taking in the sights. Shops on both sides of the pedestrian only street.

This is awful (JK Rowling is one of the most vile humans on the planet): "Later this year Britain’s second official Harry Potter boutique is set to open in the area." www.standard.co.uk/news/politic...

Get rid of all crap US ‘candy stores’ and those annoying pedi cabs. Bring back the great British sweet shop!

Only one of many. @crystalsoul42.bsky.social · 31/07/2026

If my Cadbury experience is any indication, you’re better off without the American candy.

Would already be there had Westmimster Council not been their usual intransigent dicks and blocked the original, perfectly acceptable, proposal years ago. Well done on not giving up.

Definitely trees, plants and seating areas

HumeFan @aselectfew.bsky.social · 31/07/2026

Can we have more trees here in North London too please? They create such relief against the baking sun especially for us in top floor flats with no gardens - I wish the area at back of my flat had not been made over for cars and had kept the original trees

You have to, sensibly, sort out cycle traffic. Your current proposals won't work and,if they are enforced, you will see a spike in cycle KSIs. The rest of the world recognises that cyclists present an insignificant level of danger to pedestrians when compared to motor vehicles, why can't you?
