Silvia Moreno-Garcia @silviamg.bsky.social · 18/07/2025My favorite anecdote about THE BEWITCHING is that people are surprised a student has a laptop in 1998. I had a laptop in 1998. Weighed like a ton of bricks and had a CD player. We also had Internet. Connected via the phone jack and it made funny sounds. We messaged each other through ICQ.. Etc. 161695 169
Stan Fresh @stan-fresh.bsky.social · 18/07/2025The Matrix is a '99 movie. Cell phones and laptops were part of that. 010 1

Random Jeweler @randomjeweler.bsky.social · 18/07/2025My dad had a primitive laptop in the 90s but I used a desktop in the living room 010 1
Rev Abuelite Héctor Octavio [con acento] believes in you @mexicanity.bsky.social · 18/07/2025I remember seeing the ThinkPads and not feeling them. I learnt to assemble my own desktops and felt very limited by how little you could upgrade a laptop. ISPs in Mexico around that time were so iffy! Do I have to get The Bewitching to get flashbacks to my 90s?? 😂😂 110 1
Kim Novak - The Reading Rx @cfpharmd.bsky.social · 18/07/2025I don’t recall anyone having a laptop in undergrad… too expensive at the time…but it took a whole moving truck to cart a desk top around. I could definitely see international students going that route though. 100 1
Rachel Gutin @rachelgutin.bsky.social · 18/07/2025I got my first laptop in the fall of 98! I took it with me on my gap year before college. It was a Mac, and if I recall correctly, it lasted less than a year before it fried itself. (My subsequent Mac laptops have behaved far better, thankfully.) 000 0
Rebecca Stone Gordon @meanlouise.bsky.social · 18/07/2025That’s bananas & a good morning laugh/groan b/c a friend & I were just chatting about a history of personal computing course we developed in 98. And there was a lot of history by then. I mean, the colorful clamshell iBook came out the next year (in 1999). 000 0
Melissa Ann Singer @masinger.bsky.social · 18/07/2025I had one in 1996, possibly earlier, bought by my employer. Used it while working at home for several months after my daughter was born. Cassette tape backup drive, dial-up internet, CompuServe email. 010 1
Steam Powered Cthulhu @lostshadows.bsky.social · 18/07/2025My dad got one of these in the 80s. I bruised my shin on it while rearranging some stuff. Portable computers had come a long way by the late 90s. 030 3
Sarah @sawcat.bsky.social · 18/07/2025I didn't get my first laptop until 2001 when I went away to grad school, but they were around when I got my own computer in 1998 for college. Late 90s we were drowning in AOL disks. We were the weird people with non AOL emails. Digital cameras were out by 2000 also. Got one for my graduation. 010 1

Robin Bird @robinxbird.bsky.social · 18/07/2025I think my brother got one then (he's older than me) but he was also doing a degree in Computer Sciences. My stepdad had one from about 1995 and we were allowed to use it and did the learn to type program on it. 000 0
