No shade on you, but that is exactly the kind of talk that drives this little pedant around the twist!

I am a renown pedant about local authority boundaries.

Does the political boundary have popular meaning? New York City people, for instance, are very picky about ‘you must live in the 5 boroughs’ is London like that?

Does London have proper boundaries? Like ‘everyone who lives on this side of the line is in London, everyone else is not’?

I’m delighted to discover someone other than my father thinks this. (And this story is the most popular thing I have ever posted on the internet!)

I watched Temple of Doom on telly with me old Dad decades ago. He sat quietly until the climax where British troops show up to save the day, and suddenly says ‘at the start they said it was 1933 but those rifles are Lee Enfield number 4s that didn’t enter service until 1941’

A once reliable and ubiquitous system, assembled voluntarily by NGOs using a platform provided and enabled by the state, now requires a private provider relying on ad hoc 'crowdsourced' labour so individuals can use the internet to 'discover' where they have the best chance to purchase a sausage.

Thermoclines & Trump & all, sure, but I wonder if there's an angle where Abbot was previously a 'private matter' for Texas to deal with but people are drawing the line at letting him leave the house unaccompanied?

It's a testament to the depth & breadth of electoral dysfunction in the state of Texas that Abbott has gotten as far as he has.

And once again: every actual artist has stories about being hounded and pestered and micromanaged over individual pixels, by the very same people who ship absolute fucking slop that can't even spell the company's name right and which makes all the food look like it's made of bugs and worms etc.

I genuinely believe that anyone I am speaking to should be allowed to record what I am saying, and I should be held accountable for things I say. I don't see the argument against it. (third parties are different, obviously)

If this execution goes ahead what of the firing squad? by tradition all volunteers? will their faces be covered? they will each be taking part in an event that will change and taint their lives forever. what would the "optics" be if they covered their faces?

Booth work is fun. I am genuinely sad that 'election day' has faded as an event. It was the pre-eminent Australian cultural event. *Everyone* votes *today*, between 8 and 6. Crowds & pageantry. That's powerful stuff and concentrated but it's been diluted so quickly, almost without anyone noticing

The party room is Cory + six I think? That's a manageable size. I guess the next 6/12/18/? months will indicate whether Bernadi is a lucky kook, or a professional operator. (can anyone work with Pauline?)

I hadn't thought about what a large ONP vote implies about the on-the-ground experience at polling places, for vollies and voters. There are new risks and they need to be avoided or mitigated.

zz9pza @zz9pluralzalpha.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
The influx of that type from the Libs to ONP is going to be a thing.

I know a retired DPP guy who says Brandis was the laziest QC he'd ever dealt with
110
zz9pza @zz9pluralzalpha.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Older libs aren't too bad. Ron Boswell was pleasant and chatty in '04. George Brandis was childish & sneering in '10 (at a 'wtaf is wrong with you' level). Most fun I've had with another vollie was the DLP in '10. We built a little routine we'd do about every 15 mins with the slow moving line.

zz9pza @zz9pluralzalpha.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
The worst vibes I've ever picked up from other vollies on HTV, was New Farm State School at the 2015 Qld election. Local poofs handing out for the LNP. They were in an absolute filthy mood all day.

zz9pza @zz9pluralzalpha.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Thinking about SA... Cory Bernardi probably explains much of it. He supplied local credibility to the local ONP, and removed his personal vote from the Libs?
100
zz9pza @zz9pluralzalpha.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I don't think we can explain the SA election without a major change in voters' perceptions of ONP. (Unless it's the start of a proper split in the Liberal party. But SA seems like the least likely place for that to happen 🤷‍♂️)

Australians are strongly biased towards parties that look 'professional'. Visible campaign presence, volunteers everywhere &c. PUP did that magnificently in 2013. In SEQ one couldn't go to any kind of public event without a bunch of fresh-faced backpackers in yellow shirts handing out leaflets

And look at the Palmer United vote and the Greens in 2013. 2010 Grn +4% 2013 Green -4.5% PUP +4.9% I think the Greens took themselves out of contention for those pox-on-both voters when they made such a song and dance about the C&S agreement with the Gillard government.

On the flip side, watching Mike Collins's worst moments I am thinking about Republican primaries and the departure of 'sensible people' from the population of their primary voters. How deep and wide is the Republicans' 'candidate quality' problem?

"In conversation: Quincy Jones" in New York Magazine. hat's the really salacious one I think

zz9pza @zz9pluralzalpha.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
There were two print interviews I think? The 'Quincy Jones has a story about that' one in GQ, and I recall another that started rather more coarsely and unpleasant, a 'no fat chicks' kid of thing.

Just saw someone say that if Starmer was still PM, Labour would have lost this by-election and while I don’t doubt the analysis of his personal popularity, I do feel like they’ve misunderstood the conditions necessary for a by-election to be held in his former seat.

This is a really a key moment for Australia to rise to the moment and start walking the talk on a Future Made in Australia. We are the natural trading partner to deliver on this ambition with Korea. We can provide the clean commodities, like green iron, as Korea shifts away from coal and gas.
