It is very valuable when an employee finds themselves with a health issue that is short term but leave intensive, such as a pregnancy or unexpected surgery. Not everyone has a large leave balance to pull from, especially newer employees.

Luckily, they decided to find it hilarious and mostly enjoyed the paid 9-month trip to DC where the class was held. It was insane and grossly offensive, of course, but better than being at work.

It’s not just French. My former employer once required several employees who were native Spanish speakers (from Puerto Rico) to do a 9-month Spanish language class in “Spain Spanish” before they were allowed to go work in Puerto Rico. I’ve also seen US news stations subtitle southern US dialects.
