Nice commentary about social sciences in NSF in this. My hunch is that since the debate about NSF's funding, social science has always been seen--in some way--as connected to programs to address social challenges. (1/n) www.macroscience.org/p/what-weve-...

“Integrate SBE without reducing social science to a service role. Social and behavioral researchers should help frame problems and produce knowledge, not merely translate findings from projects and other technical fields.”
“Despite random assignment and required advocacy, the groups identified ways in which social and behavioral research can
benefit society while deploying it more ambitiously. Embedding researchers throughout government may deepen integration, but distributed projects do not by themselves maintain disciplinary communities. As was commented and affirmed by multiple participants, social science cannot simply be sprinkled across technical programs and expected to reproduce the knowledge base which SBE funding currently enables.”

I posted about the recent OSTP call for major science agencies to create metascience units, and with colleagues I offer perspectives on how to get this work to have greater societal impact and public value: engineeringoutcomes.substack.com/p/metascienc...

Had a great conversation with NASA’s @zpirtle.bsky.social this week prompted by his great work on the Artemis, Ethics and Society initiative and my analysis of it for CIGIOnline. Looking forward to more ethical reflection at NASA. www.cigionline.org/articles/nas...
