I think Mamdani is absorbing a ton of attention and critique that’s kind of standing in for the reality that there is no socialist bloc with the power to actually affect US foreign policy, and no socialist labor movement either.

It’s crazy how the Republican Party is funded by like 4 people now. Elon alone has enough money to fund one of the two major political parties indefinitely. Seems bad for democracy.

Basically half (or more) of referendum questions on almost any ballot will boil down to manipulating voters into giving big business more money and power. I kind of hate them, even when the results are good at times, it’s just a bad system.

there's more than a hint of 'noble savage' in the way people outside the trades talk about those jobs and especially those workers. there's a reason people leave those jobs for less physically demanding ones if the option becomes available! enough salt-of-the-earth rhapsodizing!

A couple real changes that might be going on here: One real decline is churches. That’s the only truly free third space I can think of from my youth & it attracted lots of kids, including some devout atheists. I don’t know what the state of church youth outreach is today

I know this is a common belief, but it’s not true. If people went anti-vaxx/MAHA because they were excluded from the medical establishment, we would see sky-high rates among poor people, minorities and the uninsured. We don’t.
