A lot of #museums are removing human remains from display if they don't have explicit consent from the person. They're often replaced with casts sourced commercially, but @hannahcornish.bsky.social at #NatSCA2025 pointed out that often these casts are made from remains that also don't have consent.
Hannah Cornish stood at a lectern with her title slide behind her. It reads:
"Making an exhibition of ourselves: displaying and not displaying human remains in the Grant Museum" and shows images of two museum displaysA PowerPoint slide reading "But then..." showing a comemrcially available plastic cast skull being unpacked from a cardboard box.

Absolutely love this research. @colmuseums.bsky.social repatriated NZ birds to Auckland War Memorial Museum who are undertaking genetic research to determine where these specimens came from (there was no data with specimens)- historic data mining through genomics @natsca.bsky.social #NatSCA2025

The lovely @jackdashby.bsky.social talking about the value of collections for research. E.g. After the horrendous fires in Australia, collection specimens were used to aid restoration Nb love the use of QR codes for all to source the references @natsca.bsky.social #NatSCA2025

One of my highlights from #NatSCA2025 was @pleenr.bsky.social emotive spoken word presentation on her work connecting communities with nature through art and museum collections stories

Really enjoying day 2 of #NatSCA2025, especially @zoologicallady.bsky.social’s talk. Definitely inspired some thoughts for me on our partnership with a local farm. (They don’t keep tigers though!) 🐯🐮

Here are some more cyanotype prints from my Jackdaw series. This past week has seen new followers (thank you), so I hope you don't mind me sharing work that many of you would have seen before. You can see more of this work on my website: www.deborahparkin.co.uk/galleries-ii...
A cyanotype print of two jackdaws in a hawthorn tree in blossom. The jackdaws are in the centre of the image, sitting on a branch. The middle of the image is white and light blue and towards the edges the blue becomes deeper.A single jackdaw balancing on a small branch of a hawthorn tree that is in blossom. It is a cyanotype print and the blue deepens towards the edge. The Jackdaw is silhouetted.A cyanotype print of three jackdaws perched on a rowan tree in winter. Behind the rowan tree (which is on the right hand side of the image) you can see a woodland that is covered with a heavy snowfall.A cyanotype print of lots of jackdaws in a tree. The tree is to the right of the image and there are two jackdaws in flight to the left of it - the tree is full of jackdaws.

One of my favourite display specimens from the Irish Room at the Dead Zoo. This one is an old specimen from Luggala, Co. Wicklow - which is still one of the best places to spot ravens! #corvuscorax #commonraven #biodiversity #wildlife #birds #corvids
Image shows a taxidermy common raven in side profile, glossy sheen visible on feathers.
