Hm. The Feminine Mystique: Landmark book chronicling the outcome of a sociological study on collegiate women that concluded _all the way back in the fifties_ that repressive motherhood destroyed women. Katie Miller post: Liebensraum nonsense on top of a professional baby photo, signifying nothing.

A big fan of using an underscore and a number until a good name comes up. Feel like after a while, you know if _ feels more like a Sunita or a Kevin or a Bailey, etc.

There's no 'in it to win it' in this gig. Passion fuels the words and it's okay to let your freak flag fly, because at the end of the day, we like writing. We're broke anyway and we like it. Art comes from the gut, not from pandering to risk aversion and chasing the next x.

Pleased to see #pretendpanel grow. It's a fun event/writing community presence. Ok, so my question is a bit of a softball one: font of choice. What font do you absolutely have to write in to get the mood right to make the story flow from your head to word document? (Mine's Aptos.)

It looks like a Taco Bell with the serial numbers filed off, now with added freezer aisle tater tots cooked to a reasonable warmth and then left to fend for themselves in a greasy paper bag.

Self-driving people are even drawn to the light rail tracks. I think the little ceramic bumps work like an anglerfish's light for some drivers. Especially ones with VA tags. (This is probably the fifth time this year someone tried to play chicken with the light rail. It's also the funniest.)

Love it. Has a wonderful 'unified theory of townhomes' feel about it. Could be England, could be Baltimore, could be Toronto, or somewhere in Trinidad. Feels like home.

The Leaf Sheep is a 5mm sea slug that steals chloroplasts from algae and keeps them alive in its own tissue, photosynthesizing sunlight into food. Only a handful of animals on Earth can do this.

The Jeffries of the world don't see the Republicans as an existential threat to the very real people that are their constituents. They see them as their cowardly coworkers from January 6th which, if it had been properly taken seriously, would have resulted in treason charges for all involved.

(Saturday but just saw the post.) Politics as a whole need to embrace progressivism, not populism. A lot of establishment leaders in the Democratic party cling to whatever they think will get them the most political advantage 'across the aisle' instead of just committing to advancing society.

Every interaction in life seems to be hashtagged now, sorted for commodification, the same way it is on the internet.

...the way it wouldn't be if the person was a commenter/lurker online. It's almost as if people are bolder on the internet under a persona than they are just shooting the breeze with a fellow member of the public. It's kind of worrying, and disingenuous.

Kind of wish that non-net related life was as interactive as the web. I've met wonderful people via the internet but there's been such a sea change with people because of it, and I think it's to the overall detriment of society. Every social interaction outside is a nervous dance...

Still thinking social media is kind of a bugbear, but glad to see people out and about and enjoying life and giving their various interests their all. It's an encouraging window peek into the lives of the 'all and sundry' Bluesky community. A nice thing to see in the world.

My most screwed up character has a fantastic relationship with her adoptive mother. (Don't know what that really says about me there.) By and large they just have standard issue parents or unbelievably, comically bad ones. (I seem a bit stuck on the 'hilariously abusive childhood' trope.)

Societal expectations being what they are, you have to put the best foot forward and hide the emotional bleeding you're doing so other people can feel good about doing emotional labor (i.e., asking about your mom.) No one wants to be the one to accidentally dislodge all the messiness that brings.

Having a very complicated time of it since nearly losing mine earlier in the year. She's never been exactly what you'd call a mom. At her best she's always been the teenage-brained older sister doing the babysitting, and at her worst she's a witch type borderline with a colossal victim complex.

Well, we've made our way back to Mother's Day again. Hopefully the fictive moms, super moms, aunties and grannies are having a good one. For those with lost moms, or eternally absent moms, or unaccepting dismissive moms--it's okay. We're in this trench together.

Most publishers think sustainability = recycled paper. The real impact comes from: – Fixing overproduction – Smarter distribution – Better demand signals That’s where sustainable book publishing actually shifts the industry.

Love having/making soundtracks, but have a kid that dislikes hearing music the way that I do and I'm not an earphones person, so I've gone about training myself to hum/sing the songs I've curated for the assignment inside my head while working. (One day it will make me invincible at karaoke too.)
