In 2025 (less than 30 days away), PayPal will start selling your transaction history for targeted advertising. I very highly recommend logging into your account and going to Settings > Data & Privacy > Personalized Shopping. If you're reading this, turn that off RIGHT NOW before you forget.
A screenshot of PayPal's terms of service. Big wall of legalese text, which I will be pasting in below. You don't need to read it, here's the important part:

"The key update to the Privacy Statement explains how we will share information with merchants to personalize your shopping experience and recommend our services to you. Personal information we disclose includes, for example, products, preferences, sizes, and styles we think you’ll like. Information gathered about you after the effective date of our updated Privacy Statement, November 27, 2024, will be shared with participating stores where you shop."

Here's the whole paragraph:

We are updating our Privacy Statement to explain how, starting early Summer 2025, we will share information to help improve your shopping experience and make it more personalized for you. The key update to the Privacy Statement explains how we will share information with merchants to personalize your shopping experience and recommend our services to you. Personal information we disclose includes, for example, products, preferences, sizes, and styles we think you’ll like. Information gathered about you after the effective date of our updated Privacy Statement, November 27, 2024, will be shared with participating stores where you shop, unless you live in California, North Dakota, or Vermont. For PayPal customers in California, North Dakota, or Vermont, we’ll only share your information with those merchants if you tell us to do so. No matter where you live, you’ll always be able to exercise your right to opt out of this data sharing by updating your preference settings in your account under “Data and Privacy.”

My insurance has been great so far. But you know why? I have good coverage, yes, but more importantly, breast cancer is Very Common. (And Stanford clearly teaches their doctors how to argue with insurance.) I'm obviously super grateful but also so, so mad-- it should be like this for everyone.

The English department's IT team trying to explain the password policy to faculty in language they understand
block of text from a book: "The relation of a strong password, taken as a signifier, to its signified is technically
arbitrary. Imposed for the occasion, it is no less purely relational than any signature,
since its function is not to be but to differ. A strong password is of course also conven-
tionally or historically arbitrary, in the sense that it is chosen at a particular place and
time, is subject to degradation in time, and requires renewal if it is to continue to perform
its function: that is, to differ. Yet such change is itself technical in character, a reconstruc-
tion of structural difference against temporal deferral, intended to preserve the security
of the immutable that authentication provides, defends, and presumes or requires all at
once. One changes one’s password to preempt its degradation in time, as storage follows
use, exposure threatens storage, brute force computational attack follows exposure, and
identity masquerade follows a successful attack. Even where it is a strong password and
thus nothing like a word at all, the password suffers the passing that time imposes on
language, and which literary language perhaps merely accents with constructed poly-
semy.""the technical function of the password is to thwart time in the
name of security: to verify, by means of an invariant linguistic signature, that for the pur-
pose of access to resources, I am the same user I was yesterday. The password permits
me, the user possessing it, to pass, and serves as a pass or key, a promise that nothing
has changed."

The book is grey green, with a background comprising a photo of a man crouching to examine the underside of a mushroom he has just picked. The first spread in a book. On the left side, "Music Lovers' Field Companion" is written in large letters with "John Cage" written in small letters below. A paragraph written in a jaunty serif typeface, larger than you might expect, covers the right side. The book is on a grey comforter cover.

Sincere question: who is the "call" feature for on Facebook? Folks in the global south? Folks in rural areas who otherwise have bad cell or data service? For me it's 100% a vector for unwanted contact by people I knew vaguely in high school, so I feel like I *must* be missing something here.
