I would expect nothing less! My life goal is to be more Larry.

I get it. This was from the day after I submitted my dissertation.

I thought I could rely on Rob Harvilla for light relief after I finished teaching my philosophy class on the nature of explanation. But the mailbag was full of questions like “What it is it for a song to explain a decade?” and “What makes these songs explanatory, per se?” 🙄🤣

I was going to avoid posting or reposting on Yom Kippur, but surely this is an acceptable exception.

Found this paper yesterday and can’t figure out if it’s serious or a parody but it’s absolutely brilliant either way

I encouraged a grad student to work on Smart's view of 'topic neutrality' but they decided to work on the hard problem of consciousness instead. FML.

In defense of 2015 me, I think I wasn't allowed to add footnotes to a Mind book review so this ended up as a parenthetical in the main text too.

In the first introductory essay, for example, Stich describes his invitation
to Chomsky’s Princeton lecture that motivated his early work as an
accident, probably intended for someone else. In the second introductory
essay, Stich portrays his involvement with Nisbett’s groundbreaking work
in social psychology as happenstance. On Stich’s telling of these stories, he comes across as someone who just happened to be where interesting events were taking place (in much the same way as Meat Loaf ’s autobiography describes his meeting John F. Kennedy in Dallas just hours before the assassination, and picking up a hitch-hiker on Sunset Boulevard who turned out to be Charles Manson (Meat Loaf and David Dalton, To Hell and Back: The Autobiography, London: Virgin Publishing Ltd., 1999)). The truth is, of course, that Stich himself transformed what might otherwise have been chance encounters into new ideas and fruitful collaborations.

I could have sworn I put this in a footnote but nope, 2010 me apparently opted for a parenthetical in the main text. Cringe.

"We presumably
want to allow that elements of the brain which
govern activities such as respiration and digestion are not
cognitive, not to mention the intuition that foreign bodies
introduced into brains do not thereby become part of the
cognitive system. (Were the latter the case, Phineas Gage
could replace Otto as the mascot of the extended cognition
movement)."

"Correction: An earlier version of this story featured a picture of a kea wearing love heart sunglasses. There is no suggestion that kea were involved in kākāpo fuck season."

Yesterday I saw a Matchbox 20 tribute band at a watermelon festival in rural northern California and it was better than when I saw real Matchbox 20 at Wembley Stadium in 2003.
