$Simpleton. These fucking creatures are always braying about possession and ownership as though they’ve any right to such a claim. Their lives are measured in decades. Which they spend humping anything that moves as if it were the only thing they know. It’s almost tragic, truly, that he’s so little grasp on what real possession is. My girls are not property. They’re My responsibilities, My charges… My Blood… His pleas fall on the same deafening silence all the others have, consumed by the oblivion he has yet to beg Me for. And as I circle him with silent footfalls, studying his frail features, I can’t help but be a little impressed with his resolve. His will to live has almost been inspired, so far, but I grow bored with his refusal to give Me what I want. I come to a stop behind him, sliding one of My claws from the base of his tailbone to slowly count the vertebrae. One… Two… Three… His wails have long since been reduced to ragged squeaks from dehydration, a fact I am reminded of as I twist My talon in slow circles around his sciatic nerve. The seconds tick by in melodic agony, a sound I’ve come to enjoy a little too much from My vengeance hunts. It never gets old, the feeling of a delicate nerve between My fingers, especially when the adrenaline and cortisol season the blood so deliciously. The longer their hearts race as only a prey creatures’ can, the longer their blood marinates the meat and grey matter. The only value they have once they’ve tested My patience. I begin to measure the time in the beats of his heart, even as the pain brings about the telltale palpitations of arrest. A sign it’s time to let up, at least in part, but I prolong the yoking each time, showing him what it feels like to know a fraction of the lasting trauma he’s inflicted on what’s MINE.$

That's how I've started looking at it. Maybe it's my own biases coming through, but the setting is just as much a character in a story as the people are, and can often be so much more. Progress is progress, no matter whether its on the draft or the notes. 😊

Part of that worldbuilding has been "Lytherial", the conlang I've built for the setting. Credit where it's due, @vectorknight.bsky.social helped me with picking the name after he misread one of the ones I'd been mulling over. I loved the misread so much more than the others I'd looked at.

Welp, it's been a little over a week since I posted anything, but I've picked up Scrivener and it's taken me a few days to get everything transferred over. I'm still working on getting my notes copied over from Obsidian, but it's already making an impact on my productivity. Brain is braining!!

Katherine feels drawn to the enigmatic intensity Zethrie seems to exude with everything she does. It's the allure of a mystery that begs to be solved that first draws her in. Then it becomes something else entirely. Compassion and empathy for the plight of a woman who knows only solitude.

Zethrie is able to hear and manipulates thoughts and memories as effortlessly as she breathes, yet she finds herself almost completely unable to do the same to Katherine, making her the quietest company, and subsequently the most compelling. She's a puzzle, and Zeth simply can't resist a good one.

I appreciate that. I have several friends who write fanfics of varying fandoms, so it’s not an unfamiliar space to me. I only really have one or two fandoms I can claim I have enough knowledge to write fics for, though, so it’s just not something I’ve done. Might be worth trying though.

You’re allowed an opinion, and they’re allowed to disagree with that opinion, especially in defense of their community. Nobody is trying to silence or exclude you, and they even stated they have people in that server who write both fanfic and traditional.

I shared something intended to be supportive, not spark an argument about creative spaces online being favored toward fanfics. There are plenty of spaces like Royal Road that support original works as well as fanfics. Go out and fill the world with your art. There is nobody keeping you from it.

I believe flaws to be much more interesting than virtues. The ways people interact with their flaws are often much more impactful. I find the 'pure' characters in stories are often too flat, though that may just be because it's hard to write purity in an interesting way, good or evil.

Mine are anti-heroes and villains, though my bias is showing a little here. Zethrie is as much a part of who I am as I am myself. Thousands of hours roleplaying a single character will do that when you start learning about yourself through them.

She's Prideful, fiercely loyal to those she cares about, dismissive of those she feels are beneath her, and prone to abject malice when provoked. I am a sucker for anti-heroes and strong women characters, so I suppose it's no wonder she fell out of my head. 😄

Thank you! ☺️ She started life as a roleplay character almost 20 years ago, and with as much time as I've spent with her, she's probably my most complex character. The entire reason I'm writing at all right now is so that I can tell her story by my rules, and not someone else's.

I've read stuff so far beyond that level of morally gray that my judgement is going to be different than yours. That said, not every book is going to do it for every reader. Sometimes you just find one that doesn't resonate, and that's okay. Such is the nature of art, after all. 😊

Easy way I've found is to add the "Authors & Writing" and "Authors and Writers" feeds. A bunch of people will do WIP Snippet prompts, or just prompts in general, and there's almost always something interesting to see. I particularly like @wipsnips.bsky.social & @midnightrose838.bsky.social prompts!

All art is like this to some degree. It can be intimidating during the writing part, but I've found there's catharsis in letting people see behind the curtain a bit. Sometimes you learn something about yourself when seeing through their eyes. Abnormal just means interesting, in my eyes at least.
