And here's a new "Animage". This time it's Ryu charging up a fireball. I had a lot of fun creating this. I use Photoshop but this should be possible to do in most 2D apps. By the way, I have a course on animation, if you're interested, check out my website. #streetfighter #ryu

There’s many indie metroidvanias with smooth movement and combat emphasis, but none feel remotely like Dread (or vice-versa) despite this Like I loved that at any moment you can seamlessly—in & out of tons of movement/actions—precisely aim shots even for tiny windows, on controller, and in 2D

I do get why things MercurySteam added are called derivative, but typically critiquing things for this happens bc: - developers copied homework without understanding why it worked - when a game doesn’t stay unique as a sum - it totally ignores a series’ conventional appeals But Dread avoided these

Dread built on Fusion’s more involved boss fights & patterns, stronger beams/missiles, added combat tools (ex. tap missile to fire charged shot), and the result worked for so many people that much of Dread needs to stay or itself be iterated on: adding more Super/ZM DNA would have to coexist

In part I think Dread being a spiritual and literal sequel to Fusion is held against it in ways many people aren’t necessarily conscious of, and Dread even gave concessions to people who didn’t like how restrictive Fusion was: it sits between there and 1/Super/ZM as far as player freedom

So many things could fall under the idea of “this distracts from soaking in the world and navigating/puzzling” I’d rather they do new things and then try to fold back in more of the old feelings, than never do big new things (or borrow from modern genre entries, I’ll cover that too)

I feel like its balance of action combat and usual Metroid appeals was solid, but I’ve got thoughts 🧵 I worry that the idea here of “lacking synergy with past principles” won’t allow new entries to ever do much new: it’s very prohibitive on new ideas, the way older games made us feel is so fragile
