A few more modifications and a slightly better presentation for this furry little guy made in #b3d. #Blender3D has so many little nooks & crannies you can get lost in.

Taking a temporary break from working on my recent rabbit character (he needs clothing) to continue experimenting with different #b3d hair techniques on another character since there's more hair stuff in #blender3d I want to learn.

You think you're getting the hang of something, but then a few days later you realize that was rubbish. But now...now you're getting the hang of it. Hair in #b3d. Still frustrating, but slightly more fun. Progress.

My first experience working with fur in #blender3d has been equal parts fun & frustrating. Nothing here is finished (inc the sculpt), but after literal days of messing around, I'm finally making headway & figuring out the #b3d quirks & solutions to them.

To get into #blender3d new sculpting tools, I've been intermittently modeling a jacked rabbit. Still needs tweaking, but fur and clothing (fighter or blacksmith, maybe) will likely hide a lot. I may just take a shortcut in that direction. Plus, I'm looking forward to playing with #b3d fur & cloth!

In anticipation of testing out #Blender3d updated sculpting tools, I've been tweaking my base mesh to get different character forms. Early stages, but I think making digitigrades look balanced might be tricky. Looking forward to sculpting in #b3d.

Here's another ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #blender3d addon I recently acquired that's immediately become an essential part of my #b3d experience. Less than $2 on BM & GR and well worth it. Render Preset Manager allows you to save your Render & Output settings as presets. Saves time! blendermarket.com/products/ren...

Reporting #blender3d bugs is easy when you know where to look. You can help make #b3d better for everyone by reporting any issues you have and not waiting for others to do it for you. Report bugs at: projects.blender.org

A few more test renders from my #blender3d procedural planet experiments. Getting a better grasp on things & learning lots! Especially how easy it is to break the illusion of proper scale when you design things procedurally at a planetary scale. Lots of #b3d fun though!

A few more flawed, but interesting test renders from my recent exploration into procedural planets made in #blender3d Still working on everything except the atmosphere, which I'm pretty content with. Can you believe this is just a 2m sphere?

Some more experimenting in the #blender3d procedural planet rabbit hole. Running into plenty of issues, but pleased with progress. I love this kind of stuff because it prompts so much learning in order to overcome issues in #b3d See also: bsky.app/profile/zero...

Recently jumped down a procedural planet making rabbit hole in #blender3d (applying a combination of different techniques I've seen by others) resulting in this first pass. Still lots of fun technical & artistic issues to overcome here, but I figured I'd start sharing my progress.

💡Be mindful of occasional inconsistencies with regard to UI/input precision in #Blender3d For example, cell fracture extension reads "0.00" for the margin, but it isn't actually "zero", it's "0.001" & not visible until you click it. For those who work at real world scale it matters.

💡 If you're frequently opening #Blender3D files without loading the UI (often other people's files), did you know that "Load UI" is a default setting you can turn off in #b3d preferences? #blendertip

💡Did you know that you can easily add objects, modifiers, geometry nodes, and shader nodes in #blender3d by typing the first letter of each word in the search field to quickly bring up matching items. #blendertip #b3d

💡If you have a busy #blender3d scene & can’t easily find your selected object in the outliner, simply hover your mouse in the outliner and hit the “~” (tilde) key and select “show active” and #b3d will automatically be found and highlighted. #blendertip

💡 Did you know that you don't have to tediously deactivate addons to test #Blender3D with factory settings? There are 2 simple ways on #b3d Windows (& probably similar on other OS). #blendertip

Many people know that SHIFT+ALT+Z in #blender3d will toggle overlays, but... 💡Did you know there is an overlays icon in #b3d that is only visible in mesh edit mode and it provides useful overlays like edge length and face area? #blendertip

Changing default units in #blender3d isn’t necessarily an ideal solution for anyone, but it may have the effect of making some #b3d physics-related addons that don’t allow users to change default collision values to actually work as expected with real-world scale. #blendertip See also:

Working in real-world scale in #blender3d matters and so do #b3d's defaults. Here are just a few places where it's important to pay attention to scale. #blendertip See also: bsky.app/profile/zero...

Some people say #Blender3D physics is broken. But my tests so far have shown that common physics issues are likely related to not changing #b3d's default collision settings to appropriate values. #blendertip See also: bsky.app/profile/zero...

Yes, even cloth + rigid body physics work in #blender3d at real-world scale when you adjust #b3d's default settings accordingly. #blendertip See also: bsky.app/profile/zero...

Zero Dean @zerodean.bsky.social · 30/01/2024
Working at real-world scale with #blender3d physics means rigid bodies will sometimes "explode" away from each other or not be able to get very close. Often, the simple solution is to change #b3d's default collision margin from .04m to .001m. #blendertip

💡In #blender3d Control+L will copy ALL modifiers from one object to selected objects. But did you know that you can... Copy a single modifier in #b3d by using the dropdown menu in the modifier panel of the active object you want to copy to other selected objects. #blendertip

If you're a #blender3d user and you use an addon, material, asset, vanilla #b3d feature (physics, cell fracture...), or anything else doesn't work as expected at real-world scale, please let the developer know (including Blender Foundation). #blendertip

Did a little work on some cracked ice in #blender3d to supplement my ice shader. This required finding a decent way to make semi believable cracked ice geometry as well as tweaking some settings so the #b3d ice would hold up at extreme close-up. #blenderart #blenderrender #3dart

Flipped normals are another common issue when working with other people's #blender3d files. This is why I recommend turning on face orientation in #b3d under Viewport Overlays & making it usable by changing the Face Orientation Front setting ALPHA to 0 under Themes>3D Viewport

One of the other things my #blender3d startup file contains is a plane with a grid pattern. Why? Because I can easily tell at a glance this model is approximately 8" wide. You can of course set your #b3d grid pattern to cm like a civilized person if you like. #blendertip

A slightly enhanced & updated version of why I always include scale objects for reference in my #blender3d startup file. I've run into numerous issues working with other people's #b3d creations (both free & paid) & the issues are frequently related to scale. #blendertip

This is why my #blender3d startup file contains a couple of objects with real-world scales for reference. Without them, it is impossible to judge how large the #b3d default cube actually is. #blendertip

💡Did you know that there's a bevel node in the #blender3d shader editor? It will provide the perception of bevels when rendered in #b3d Cycles and it can make a huge difference with the look of hard edges with very little effort. #blendertip

OK, based on some great feedback & then some testing, here is a revision to a previous #blendertip about how to get flat shaded colors in #blender3d that are unaffected by lighting (in both Eevee & Cycles) and also don't emit light in #b3d.

💡Did you know that you you can simply enter imperial units in #blender3d dimensions fields (example: 1'6.25") and #b3d will automatically convert it to metrics? (equals: .46355m) 🤯 All this time and I've been doing conversions with Google. #blendertips

Before I took that year long break from #blender3d, I was working on a procedural fruit shader. Opening the file again, I see I have a lot of work to do in some cases, but it's fun work. I changed all the version back to v.01 as a starting over point. The 2 similar images are Cycles vs Eevee.

Of course, there was also my experiments in procedural #blender3d fruit shaders. I mean, why just make a generic apple when you can make several varieties. And other fruit, too. It's way more fun that way. Of course, nothing is ever truly finished. #b3d

A few more #blender3d glass marble material experiments. I was trying to clean up my shader node tree and ended up making more marble variations in the process. I also went and bought some real marbles. Will be cool to try to duplicate, but they are kind of boring by comparison. 😂 #b3d

Some more #blender3d marble shader experiments. Getting some interesting results which I may explore further at some, but it's really easy to get lost in tweaking! These aren't really intended to be realistic marbles, but I'm going to go buy some real marbles for reference. #b3d

I've been down another #blender3d rabbit hole experimenting with glass marble related materials. These are only slightly related to the results I was actually looking for when I started, but I thought they were cool anyway. I'm a modeler. I don't know why I get so absorbed in making materials. 😂

Started modeling some glassware in #blender3d. But empty glasses aren't nearly as impressive as they are when they're filled with stuff. So of course I went down the #b3d material making rabbit hole again, too. It's easy to lose many hours in a day (or night) that way.

In May '22 when I first started learning #Blender3d (after 13 years away from 3D), this battery pack was what I wanted to model, but I didn't know #B3D well enough to do it. Then I got pulled away before I had a chance to try again. Now I'm brushing up on my B3D skills a year later finally did it.
