With news that a veto override attempt on Introduction 175-B has been delayed, Caucus leaders Sandy Nurse, Tiffany Cabán, Alexa Avilés, and Kayla Santosuosso issue the following statement:

“We’re relieved that Introduction 175-B is behind us. We have long advocated for measures to combat hate, such as @jfrejnyc NYC Against Hate, which we were thrilled to see in the Mayor’s Executive Budget. We know that proactive and data-driven measures are the only way to effectively combat antisemitism, Islamophobia, transphobia, and all other forms of hate violence.

Since 175-B’s introduction, we have seen collective opposition from civil rights organizations, religious leaders, unions, and educational organizations warning about the serious risks of infringement on Americans’ constitutional right to peacefully assemble. It would have been irresponsible for this bill to become law, especially as we witness a crackdown on campuses. Students and faculty are facing widespread terminations and deportations, all as a consequence of exercising the right to organize against genocide.

Our city can protect students’ right to make their voices heard while also making clear that hate violence has no place here. We remain committed to combating hate violence in NYC and centering the needs of vulnerable New Yorkers in the term ahead.”With news that a veto override attempt on Introduction 175-B has been delayed, Caucus leaders Sandy Nurse, Tiffany Cabán, Alexa Avilés, and Kayla Santosuosso issue the following statement:

As New Yorkers grapple with a historic affordability crisis, we are still calling on the state to contribute recurring reliable revenue through taxes on corporations and billionaires. We need this revenue to fund the agenda NYers deserve & voted for.

Gov. Hochul is putting her reelection campaign before the needs of New York’s working families by stalling crucial budget decisions, jeopardizing child care, + delaying updates to how our schools are funded. Now, she’s proposing changes to election rules that could give her even more political power

Trump gave states 10 days to sign anti-DEI policy. NY Education Department is refusing.
In a Friday letter to the U.S. Education Department, New York officials said they will not certify that the state is eliminating DEI in schools, despite threats to pull federal funding.

To make sure every family has access to affordable child care, NYS must raise wages for child care educators. Only permanent, ongoing funding for the workforce can ensure a sustainable system. @leaderasc.bsky.social @speakercarlheastie.bsky.social pls include this $1.2B investment in your budget 🙏🏾
