If you’re a programmer and struggle with hand pain, I am happy to talk to you about your options re: hands-free coding setups. It’s possible to code entirely hands-free. It’s a steep learning curve but you can do it. There’s also good hybrid setups to reduce the load on your hands DM me any time 🫶

Powerful statement earlier today from @lookitup.baby in support of a pause in evictions for Minneapolis families in this time of crisis. www.youtube.com/live/vpRmCJE...

Ian Coldwater makes a statement before the Minneapolis City Council. They wear a black knit hat and a vintage KubeCon EU 2019 (Barcelona!) t-shirt - a shirt which some of you also probably have in a drawer.

The lower third from this livestream says:

We hear of "nine nines" of uptime as a goal for a system, but today @ahl.bsky.social and I are going to be joined by the @oxide.computer team to talk about a subsystem that had that uptime -- and how it wasn't nearly enough. Join us for a wild, multi-year debugging tale! discord.gg/QrcKGTTPrF?e...

Stared at a CFP for a bit today and nothing is hitting that spark for me. I've spent a lot of time in weird spaces this last year and the last few months bootstrapping Rust at work for everyone has been a joy but a talk it does not make.

I now join the chorus of folks looking for a job. I’ve got some software and systems engineering expertise, some AI/ML expertise, and I’ve been in a business seat for the past few years, meaning I know a lot more about how GTM, sales, etc works than I did. Let me know if you’d like to talk.

The second edition of Designing Data-Intensive Applications, by myself and @chris.blue, is finished and sent off to the printers! Ebooks should be available in the next week, and print books in 3–4 weeks. Sigh of relief. 😅 (BTW, this is a good opportunity to support your favourite local bookshop!)

Book cover of "Designing Data-Intensive Applications, 2nd edition". It has a similar wild boar on the cover as the first edition, but it uses O'Reilly's new cover design, and the boar is now slightly colourised.

Driving home from Milwaukee DLC this morning on 3 hours of sleep 😪. Went 4-3 (not 5-3 that I told @imdanielholt.bsky.social sorry 😂 and it was great to meet you!) at the main tournament with dogs 🧡 💚. Didn't make day 2 but I did better than I expected and didn't get my last loss til the end.

Probably a lukewarm take, but I think many of us in the space around systems, especially those socio-technical systems and observability have quite a good outlook with how much "less than great" things look to be coming our way.

I have not paid a ton of attention to the uproar over RTO policies, bc we are all in on distributed teams and not going back. My impression (via social media) has been that these were shadow layoffs. Last month I asked an investor why they are doing RTO. He said: "Retention, mostly. And morale."
