Come for the delightfully vicious takedown of Starmer's former advisors, stay for the off-hand paragraph which may be the best explanation I have seen of Burnham's policy and rhetoric

The US abandoning its European allies to cozy up with the war criminal from the Kremlin won’t be forgotten and can’t be fixed by a Democrat winning in 2028.

The US are not our ally anymore. How much longer will Europe ignore the signs? How many more times does Trump have to openly side with Putin before we get it? Four years into the war and two years into Trump II, what have Europe's leaders actually DONE to make Europe independent from the US?

If I were cynical, I'd say this was helpful to anyone in UK govt wanting to push discussion on future relations with EU straight to re-accession, given the perils of rule-taking under any other model

This is good from Andy Burnham. He's asking the Tories and the Brexit headbangers to explain what's so good about the UK's current deal with the European Union at a time when the country is broke, businesses & industry are struggling, and economic growth is stagnant #Brexit bsky.app/profile/best...

If you ask the Islanders - you know, the people who live there - they say no. How much the electorate care about a subject is not - and should never be - the factor that determines the sovereignty of the Falklands against the expressed wishes of the people who live there.

New post: Burnham has opened the door to a "rejoin" manifesto pledge. The politics make more sense than a lot of people seem to realise. I look at what it would involve at every step from pledge to referendum. There are significant barriers but it can be done. samf.substack.com/p/the-route-...

Most striking of all is that this is explicitly a very *pro-politics* speech, a direct rebuttal to the anti-politics that is so widespread. And rightly so: politics can change things, it is an admirable thing to choose to engage in and a duty for us all to step forward and pursue.

This is *not* the result of "the success of Mahmood's reforms", but of earlier measures/other factors. Her proposals could make it considerably *worse* in future years. A few other points linked below.. archive.ph/0psJ8
Falling migration numbers could cost the chancellor as much as £7bn in fiscal headroom as he writes his first budget, The Times has been told.

Government insiders believe that John Healey, who already faced an uphill battle to balance the books next month, is likely to have an even bigger challenge after immigration significantly undershot projections from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

The Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank estimated last month that the success of Shabana Mahmood’s reforms, which have seen net migration cut to the low hundreds of thousands, could cost Healey some £4bn.

Labour sources familiar with the budget process, however, said that the figure was now closer to £6.5bn. The OBR’s migration forecasts have been consistently higher than real numbers in recent years.

Treasury officials, who have long expected Mahmood’s reforms to cause a hit to headroom, described the number as “pure speculation” but did not deny that Healey would have to contend with a larger funding gap than expected because of falling migration

It’s such a pity that No 10’s previous occupant, despite being a human rights lawyer, chose total capitulation over legislation to restore the affect and spirit of Equalities Act. A shame that contemptible excuse for a political leader will never be able to atone for.

When political commentators have a collective fit over guilt yields and frantically try to find which govt policy is responsible (while also being blissfully ignorant of global events), he’s right.
