I assumed @godotengine.org on Linux will be an install. I unzipped it. Double click. It runs. I learning using Linux day-to-day next to Godot.

After more than 10 years I started to play Spore again. And it is still fun. But as I play it I can not shake the feeling that there are nothing in it that I am not capable of doing with any modern game engine. Maybe the creature creator would be real challange to do. #gamedev

2/3 After sign up it will drop you in a project. So when Steam tells you that you find the import button in the top right corner: they mean the home page, not the project page you are on. also

This is my day off. There are renovation in the next flat. Yet I am productive. I put bacon on the shark platforms so the player know what to expect. I played Tears of the Kingdom, beaten the Water Temple. Cooked food. Made two cosplay props in Blender for my friend. Worked on my Godot skills.

Now I have to think about: should I mark the shark attack platforms? Or let the player learn the pattern? I myself like games where I have to learn where to go. But it could be frustrating too. Sharks attack at the same place every time. Player have to move fast. #gamedev
A shark just missed Cupig.

So my random first #Godot project was a simple HTML blog post creator. I write about it here: yzahkin.games/blog/posts/2... It is open source: github.com/akosnikhazy/... It creates HTML file in the posts/date/blogpost.html format, so I can build my github hosted static file blog even faster.

In PHP this looks like this print(date("Y-m-d")) #godot and every other language makes it way difficult.
GDScript code reads:
var time = Time.get_date_dict_from_system()
	print("%04d-%02d-%02d" % [
			time.year, time.month, time.day
	])

My masterful #Godot code for HTML template filling so far. I freestyle it, I know nothing yet.
Screenshot of gdscript. The code reads:
func _ready():
	posttitle = $"../title"
	postdesc = $"../description"
	posttext = $"../text"

	pressed.connect(_button_pressed)

func _button_pressed():
	var file = FileAccess.open("posts-template.html", FileAccess.READ)
	var content = file.get_as_text()
	content = content.replace("{{title}}",posttitle.text)
	content = content.replace("{{description}}",postdesc.text)
	content = content.replace("{{article}}",posttext.text)

	print(content)

Ok, so #godot documentation is a struggle. I made an UI button. I attached a script by intuition. I want to press it. The button documentation's code creates a whole button, while most people will make a button node. I solved it, from the doc I realized I should "self.pressed" it.
GDScript Code from Godot documentation.
func _ready():
	var button = Button.new()
	button.text = "Click me"
	button.pressed.connect(self._button_pressed)
	add_child(button)

	print("Hello world!")GDScript code from my code.

	print("Hello world!")

And now I am playtesting the levels I have already created. I was afraid it will be not challenging enough. But I just spent almost 2 minutes in a very small level, failing ten times, because I wasn't precise enough. It is not too hard but you have to get used to the dash move. #gamedev

There are series like Devs, that inspire me to make a game about physics. Not a physics puzzle game. Something that explains physics. That show does a great job to visually explain the problems of free will in quantum physics and has a really good idea around it.

This is kinda sad they kill avatars. I remember making website that put a text bubble over the avatar's head and you can make it say things then share the image. It was overtaken by spambot filling my database at some point. My #Xbox pfp is still my avatar. www.trueachievements.com/news/xbox-av...

I made a small spiral level, because not all levels have to be serious. Some should just be fun because of their shape. But at the end I sprinkled a teleport on it, so the player has to try to find an optimal order of how to do it. #gamedev If you squint, you can see the spiral in the code:
pure level code. Starts witn new int[,] and continues with a 2 dimensional data structure of ints zeroes representing holes and 9s representing roads.

And even the smallest code can have a dumb bug. It has to be id-1 because I check for level number not List index. #code
A piece of fixed code. The code reads:

 if (_levels.ElementAtOrDefault(id-1) == null) return null;
 return _levels[id - 1];

Not too shabby. I am not sure I will get level one by one but I can imagine cases, especially in the menu. I might draw the level pattern for the opened levels. #gamedev #code
A C# static class named LevelDataStructure.
The code reads:
public static class LevelDataStructure
{
    private static List<int[,]> _levels = new List<int[,]>() [...];

    static LevelDataStructure() {

    }

    public static List<int[,]> GetLevelList() {
        return _levels;
    }

    public static int[,] GetLevelById(int id)
    {

        if (_levels.ElementAtOrDefault(id) == null) return null;

        return _levels[id - 1];

    }

}

Today I will make a static class for the levels. Now the level list is in the GameManager, but it feels convoluted as it takes up a bunch of space and it is harder to find game logic in it. Levels are not game logic anyway. This will make my work faster too. #gamedev

Wow my level editor had a bug... it is so simple, and it worked for 10x10 levels. But at bigger non plane symetric ones it was rotated on every line... insted X Y I rendered it Y X so the levels were not good. And I noticed it now that I made the level code human readable. #gamedev

It was a \r\n in the join(',') part of the code. Lucky that javascripts does string joins instead of char ones. Much faster then making a whole level opener to change small things in already done levels.

My level editor makes the whole data structure of levels visually harder to see. My hand made levels are easy to read by glance. I might change the level editor to put line breaks in. I really do not want to make a level opener for the editor. That is more time on things only I use. #gamedev
Levels represented by multi dimensional int arrays. The editor shows them in one line.Levels represented by multi dimensional int arrays. When I make them by hand they are readable, you can even see the walls and roads.

So this level will teach the player for the dash move. It can go through two hole gaps. I made the other side wider so it feels more secure for first try. Also it the player fails dash they learn about death in the game. It is and instant restart but timer goes on. #gamedev

It looks good! I did not really understood the gradient thing from before. But you could mark difficulty with small earmarks in the conrners with color codes maybe, and put a small color legend on the bottom to explain them maybe. (my mockup uses way harder colors than I imagine tho).

I love to see works like this. I am always in awe how hard to make simple things like rocks. Every time I try it feels strange, not organic, then I see work like this and know what I see is good. For reference this is my best rock. And it is not good.

Not gonna lie: I know somewhere in my code there is a problem with execution order so at first run the game has empty string as language code... but this if statement solved it. I might find it one day. But this works perfectly. Runs once per game. Also protects from similar error. #lazy #gamedev

About two years. It started out with a grid and a cube you can move mede in half hours. But I work slow. First I did it after day job but it was such an energy drain I pushed most development to the weekends. On empty weekends I try to work lot on it. Weekdays I work on it when I have an idea.
