screenwriter has very little actual voice in an adaptation like this, so his hands were probably tied. not much you can do with bad material unless the director wills it and the director changed halfway through production so there was probably no chance of that ever happening lol

kimishinu: complete the finale a) barely featuring the main pair at all and b) being the first unequivocally Good episode in the entire run is funny, but also makes me wonder where the hell that energy was for the rest of the show lol (full spoilers in the images)

I... have a lot of Thoughts about this series. many of which I have mentioned repeatedly over the past three months of its run:

* a super bland cast of paper thin characters
I came out of the show not liking *any* of them
(until the finale, which hilariously turned me around on exactly one)
* the refusal to expound on the setting beyond "war :("
despite spending a huge chunk of the runtime on exactly that
* not even bothering to flesh out the school itself, where it takes
multiple episodes to see a second classroom, and most of the staff
are mysterious cloaked figures instead of actual characters.
but yet, again, we spend so much time watching these cloaked figures
debate the logistics of said nothing war
* a conversely clunky script that is all tell no show for characterization
(the training montage in the episode before seiran's death
was particularly egregious about this (don't get me started
on how utterly hackneyed and poorly executed *that* whole
sequence of events was, ugh))
* the third-grade level moralizing on the value of life
(even the two staff members who actually exist are barely any better)
* the entirely out-of-pocket misgendering of the nurse
(somehow made worse by them later trying to claim that mimi is
very progressive and open-minded about gender presentation
when they meet a crossdressing character)
I am told the manga still has not elaborated on fran's character
so no one knows what even prompts mimi to hurl slurs at her every time
they cross paths and we can only assume there's transphobia happening
at some layer (not that a reason would make the scenes it happens
any better, but again, we know so little about this world and its
inhabitants/culture that it's impossible to get a read on her actions
and what they mean in context. I can *only* judge them externally,
which doesn't feel great)

I'd consider the first eight episodes to be straight-up unsalvageable. you'd have to throw it all out and start from scratch to squeeze anything worthwhile out of the setup

the show briefly turns around in the final third when sheena stops acting like a wet paper bag and starts trying to learn non-combat magic to help with things in her own way (we don't ask why the school didn't bother to check anyone for aptitude in other fields--the entire institution must be assumed incompetent by default if there's *any* chance of the story holding water)

that was the first real moment in the show's run where I felt it was starting to put a bit of meat on its bones instead of just vaguely gesturing at substance. unfortunately, the argument it provokes between her and mimi is just rehashing the same "mimi is our only tool to survive this war" "but it's cruel to use her like that :(" discussion we've had multiple times before, which kind of dampens the impact. that plus the fact that it happens so close to the end of the cours, meaning there's no time for that resolve to grow into anything meaningful, kills it entirely

if the show had wasted less time in its first half, bumped sheena's taking action up to ep 4/5 or thereabouts, and let things play out from there (maybe even introduce an adult capable of thought to add a bit of perspective), I feel like there might have been potential for some decent character moments. but alas, I've already spent more time thinking about this than the author did writing it, so there's no point in speculating about what could have been. at the end of the day, it's a dreadful series that does very little right and just leaves you with this awful aftertaste.

absolutely not worth your time unless you are desperately, bitterly starved for sad kissing girls. but in a world where simoun exists, idk why you would be
