The efficacy and safety of angiotensin II for treatment of vasoplegia in critically ill patients: a systematic review
Angiotensin II is an endogenous key effector of the classic renin-angiotensin system (RAS) with potent vasoconstrictor effects.1 Although exogenous angiotensin II administration has been studied since 19412 and its safety profile was confirmed in subsequent studies,3 no RAS-targeted vasopressor agent had been commercially available until recently. In 2017, a phase-3, multinational randomized controlled trial (RCT) confirmed the efficacy of a commercial preparation of angiotensin II in catecholamine-resistant vasodilatory shock,4 which led to its approval as a second-line vasopressor for this indication.
