#Mörktober the eighth. WAIL. A nice simple one today after the struggle of yesterday.
Monochromatic image of a vaguely luminescent pearl sitting in a clump of grass, seemingly watched over by several bright white fungi.

The text reads:
The Wailing of Stars

The first mockeries were naught but failures. Those that came after were frail, too reflective of dying humanity. The last-so few in number-were each granted a memory of the stars. Yet a grit of humanity remained within them and the stars soon perished.

These stones form within certain FRAIL MOCKERIES like pearls. Whilst they can rarely be found already removed, one can always be found within those so clearly touched by the dead stars if one knows to dig for them.

Produces 2d4 dense motes of light formed during the death of a distant star. The first 4 projectiles hit a single target of your choice. The remainder hit indiscriminately. Each deals 2 damage, ignoring armour.

Each pearl contains enough power to produce 20 points of light and collapses to nothing when the last is used.

Sacrificing an omen recharges the pearl by d20.

If the stone gains more charges than it can contain it explodes, dealing all of its newly contained damage at once.

#Mörktober the seventh. Surely not a worrying number in The Dying Land. Today's kicked my ass. Writing a module like this—out of sequence, in layout, trying not to think ahead (or backwards...)—gets hard when you're writing one of the final places without knowing what's come.
Monochromatic image of four kneeling individuals openly weeping and in despair around a strange effigy of an alien creature with branching feelers, a conical trunk and a curled tail, all standing upright on a small rise. Mycelium strands connect the weepers to the effigy.

The text reads:
Effigy of Despair
It used their bodies to construct the effigy; those that killed what they could not understand. In time they too perished, and it made frail mockeries to continue the work.

It must surely know that this will never succeed.

The FRAIL MOCKERIES bring bodies to the effigy-be they alive or dead-and place them in a ring before it. Lambent threads of mycelium reach from the soil to pierce the bodies, and spread through bone and sinew to pose them in a mimicry of lamentation.

Thus posed, they are fed from the soil to sustain them and in turn-acting as conduits-the effigy, as the land is drained of life to revive what was once taken.

Freeing the weepers only kills them. Yet without this constant source the effigy will eventually fall apart.

The frail mockeries long ran out of villagers.

If any of the characters are captured they're brought here to become one with the effigy.

Dead characters-regardless of if they were buried or simply left where they fell-are seen once more, positioned around the effigy.

JOINING WITH THE EFFIGY

Those connected to the effigy find their consciousness displaced to the SHARDS OF THE COSMOS.

Those who have been forcibly joined find their minds imprisoned in the SANCTUM to suffer eternal grief for a mother they have not themselves lost. Their physical bodies will feed the effigy and be fed until they perish.

Those who have partaken of THE BODY and accepted its gifts and demands can accept the mycelium's embrace and travel willingly to THE SHARDS OF THE COSMOS. Their bodies only perish if they let them.

IF THE EFFIGY IS DESTROYED

However it is destroyed, the Branching Worm is inconsolable. The ground shakes violently, and Silver Fog…

What is it, but #Mörktober the sixth! Today was Fog.
Monochromatic image of a landscape of bare trees becoming hidden—perhaps consumed—by a fog filled with tiny lights.
The text reads:
Silver Fog

Memories of a place shift upon their recollection. Elements erased—hinged—altered. Grief finds release as tears turn to vapour, bearing with them the remembrance of the stars.
Silver vapours rise from the ground like morning mists. Constellations of cold light dance slowly within the fog, drawn together to merge and die and be reborn once more.
Where the silver fog lays thickest, recollections of that place become more arduous.
Or perhaps this is all a mere memory, the land itself erased—hinged—altered.
EFFECTS OF THE FOG
Unmark any one of the previously visited SHALLOW LOCATIONS. This place can no longer be simply PEREGRINATED to, and must be found again by chance.

Artist! Quote with your art with the best shadows! (I don't actually consider myself as such, but I saw this again recently and like how I managed to get it looking like it was caught in sudden lamplight in an otherwise pitch dark abyss.)
A jellyfish like creature with a hardened shell... Bell? Bioluminescent rings glow from its skin, as a hundred thin, spiraling, curling, reaching tendrils drift below it.

#Mörktober the fifth. Cape. The Branching Worm just waving all the red flags.
Monochromatic digital drawing of a skeleton in a faded black hooded cape sitting cross legged. All around him pale long thin mushrooms grow.
The text reads
Saprophytic Shroud
The eremite wore this threadbare hooded shroud the day his Godhead revealed itself to him. He swore his life to it, plucked the threads that grew from the mulch and the soil, and sewed them into the cloth to bear the Branching Worm for the rest of his days.

Those who wear the shroud whilst in the lands touched by the Branching Worm feel no hunger and no thirst and need not eat nor drink to sustain themselves. They cannot be surprised nor ambushed, and can always go first in combat.

The wearer sees the familiar faces of loved ones where the Frail Mockeries have none. Test PRESENCE DR14 to even want to hurt them.

Those host to the nymphs of the marrow tick see that the branching luminous threads revealed by their bite reach from the soil to touch and connect with the threads in the shroud, passing nutrients.

Removal of the shroud is seen as a betrayal, something the Branching Worm cannot handle in the depths of its grief. It cuts you off, and before long you will die of thirst and hunger, waiting an eternity for the return of its gifts.

It's not been seven days yet, sure, but tomorrow is a Monday and the start of a new week, so here's the first week of #Mörktober in one post. CW: ticks, arachnids, spider-like appendages in the fourth image.
Monochrome square image with a black furred ghost sprouting fungal bodies. The text reads: Capra Sporelings. Even long before these black-hearted goats began consuming the fruiting bodies of the Branching Worm the herder feared them. If he still had the capacity to do so-so eaten away has his brain become-he would wish only for their slaughter.
HP5 MORALE 8 MYCELIUM HIDE -d2
RAM d4 and BITE d2 SPECIAL each group of capra sporelings have been re-molded by their fungal infection.
HOW HAVE THE GOATS BEEN RE-MOLDED

I. SHARED MIND: The goats each follow the same decision each round.

2. RUPTURING BODIES: Spores fill the air upon their death. Test TOUGHNESS or become infected.

3. FUNGAL MIMICS: Not actual capra sporelings. I HP, NO ARMOUR, but otherwise identical.Image depicts a silhouette of a farmhouse on a low rise. All around it grow fields of severed limbs. Mycelium and fruiting fungus encroach on all sides, held back by the farmhouse somehow. The text depicts a comforting place, cursed to cause those who rest here to regrow lost limbs like a hydra. Apparently, the accused farmer is still here, locked in the basement, and wanting to murder the one who cursed him.Image of a white crystal or mineral shard bearing a glyph featuring a triangle with circles branching from it.
The text reads:
Found embedded in a pile of rot and fungi.
Above it, its last carved glyph still sheds a cold and distant light.
Born from the memories of long dead stars, the shards bear the glyphs of beloved gods and forbears.
The Branching Worm still grieves for its mother, and so this shard was formed.
THIS A PERSON KNOWS UPON FIRST HOLDING THE PALE SHARD:

Pierce your flesh with the shard to displace yourself and those around you to the most recent location this shard was used to carve its Glyph.

The shard deals d2 damage, +1 for every creature displaced.

THIS REMAINS UNKNOWN TO THOSE WHO USE IT:

The pale shard can only displace twenty living creatures before it shatters, instead sending those in that final displacement to the Shards of the Cosmos.

This pale shard has already displaced d10 living creatures.Image is of a monochromatic landscape, a tree silhouette framing the left edge of the image. A bloated and monstrous tick the size of a calf crawls over its roots accompanied by its nymph young.

The text reads:

Marrow Ticks.

These bastards have always been here, drawn by the trees of the ossuary. They were-until of late-poisoned and driven back by those who live and work in the woods.

When encountered, roll d666

For every 1 and 2 rolled, an adult marrow tick is encountered.

For every 3, 4 and 5 rolled 1d4 nymphs furtively latch onto a different character.

Every 6 is a lucky escape.

Those latched onto begin to see branching threads of ephemeral light reaching from the soil.

The DR of all tests is increased by 1 for each tick, and the character cannot heal from resting.

A visual check will always reveal a marrow tick nymph. Removal of the parasite hurts like hell; d2 damage per tick removed.

ADULT MARROW TICK

HP 12 MORALE 10 IRON BITE d6 SPECIAL bursts upon death. Those coated become INFECTED. Uses its incredible bulk to pin victims. Test AGILITY DR12 to avoid. Once pinned, its next IRON BITE deals d12 and shatters bone on 10+.

Again, thanks! 1 or 2 taps on the arrow keys to move boxes, & an angle shift of like +/- 0.1 or 0.2 is all most things need. I really love breaking a line of text into 2 text boxes at two slightly different angles. Adds just enough chaos for the eyes to see something is wrong, but not be assaulted.
A line of text underlined by two separate lines to indicate where an angle change occurs.

Just a few of my new friends.
Shadow
When the Sisterhood were put to the sword, they took with them the knowledge needed to sever the shadow from the dead, and so too did they take the knowledge needed to destroy them.
HD 2, AC6, # 2d6
Special: Damage as small melee weapon. If Defence Save failed due to rolling under the Shadows HD, permanently reduce STR by 1. Cannot be killed, reforming once more in 1d6 days.
Carcass Scavenger
Fused flesh, twisted spines, hundreds of thin, human limbs reaching out to snatch away corpses. Grafts what it can to its own body.
HD 3, AC 2, # 1d3
Special: Attacks deal no damage. STR Save or paralysed for 1d6 Rounds. When all threats are gone or paralysed, they begin to pull off limbs, one by one.
Severed Hand
These things are everywhere, now; a fancy of the old king who drew enjoyment from watching the punishment.
HD 2, AC 0, # 1d20
Special: If rolling under HD on a Defence Save, the severed hand begins to strangle its victim, dealing 2d6 damage per round automatically until removed.
Severed Hand of a Giant
Size of an ox and adorned with bands of beaten metals. Giants of their size have long been wiped out, and only these grizzly reminders remain of them.
HD 4, AC 3, # 1d3
Special: If rolling under HD on a Defence Save, the severed hand begins to crush its victim, dealing 3d6 damage per round automatically until removed.
Variant: Two such hands stitched together through hexes. One hand can cast a random Spell twice.

Near identical side by side images of the moon through the grime smeared, dusty window of the Artemis. In the foreground of each there is the reflection of the photographers hand, and behind the moon the earth and then the stars. The effect for sighted individuals when they cross their eyes is that they can see this in 3D due to the slight differences in the distances between both images.
