The overview says: SOC 3900 Sociology of AI uses a sociological lens to study what is popularly called "artificial intelligence." In this class students will learn about cutting edge research examining the origins, impacts, and struggles over the broad set of technologies and practices involving AI. Through an international focus, this class will cover numerous topics related to AI, including: gig work, algorithmic bias, data colonialism, resource extraction, digital labor, data center studies, and environmental and climate effects. This class will primarily focus on sociological research, but will also include scholarship from geography, history, international studies, and environmental studies, as well as other social scientific and humanistic disciplines. You know how "the infinite vertical feed" ended up being _the_ UX pattern to make excessive online consumption (specially on mobile) viable? I feel the same way about the chat UX for LLMs, to make it seem more "human". (I do think that, in both cases, the initial idea wasn't as nefarious, though)

if you want to get philosophical about it, you're going the wrong direction comparing it to conciousness what we actually have uncovered is a way to do fuzzy compression and extraction of "non-formal" logic by extrapolating intent from language programmatically

all those "thinking loops" that happen before it responds are also just the "predict the next line of the sentence machine" sending its own output to itself it's so impressively similar to how people talk because the prediction is running off a compression of nearly the sum total of all human text
