1.

This was so bloody stupid.

“Too stupid to save your marriage?” The echo of her therapist’s concern still stung.

She’d been at it for a few minutes, and the spit she used to get her started had long dried up. If anything, she was less aroused than when she got into bed.

Hermione wasn’t one for giving up, but how much more could she give? It wasn’t her fault that Ron was off in the States building his joke shop empire. Nor could he reasonably expect her to quit her real job saving lives to follow him around.

The silver glow of her patronus dimmed, casting the room in darker shadows. If she was going to do this, she needed to do it now. Ron had sent his panting, grunting, “wish this was your mouth fucking me” patronus a half hour ago, and she’d spent fifteen minutes after that laughing in embarassment.

Once she was sure her otter was corporeal once more, Hermione shimmied underneath the duvet to a familiar clandestine position. Ron’s pillow was a smushed lump between her legs, but it wasn’t the thrill of defiling it that was warming her core. Her thoughts turned to the object of her lust for the last ten years.

She was careful not to speak his name.

The first time Hermione had thought about Draco Malfoy, she hadn’t been thinking of him at all. It was his hands. Malfoy had a surgeon’s precision, so it didn’t come as a surprise to her that he would be a skilled Healer. Even at Hogwarts, his wandwork had been brutally efficient. He’d been the first in their residency to master intradermal sutures, and he’d done in it one day. Hermione studied his hands the same way she studied everything: with relentless devotion.

She thought so long and hard about them until her fingers became his fingers, and in the bed she shared with her husband, Hermione was moaning curses and pleas that her patronus would relay to him across the ocean.

“Faster, love, go faster. I’m so close.”

Her hips put in the work her cramping hand couldn’t, until humping a pillow wasn’t enough. She squirmed recklessly on the edge of something she wasn’t sure she was ready for.

“Need you. So-fucking-much. Inside me--filling me, all of me, yours, please, please!”

In all her years with Ron, she’d never said those words to him. Never begged for it.

3.

Her fingers obliged, curling along her front wall teasingly, but they were too small for what she was craving, and no amount of imagination could imitate it.

With a frustrated yell, Hermione yanked the damp pillow out from under her and tossed it towards her patronus.

Except, the otter was no longer there.

Oh well. It’s not like Ron could tell whether she finished or not anyway. She expected his stupid jack russell to come bounding in through the wall any minute now, slobbering in his voice about how hot this was, claiming credit for her orgasm.

Except, that didn’t happen either.

The fireplace suddenly roared green.

The floo in her bedroom connected only to St. Mungo’s for emergencies, and she was used to the nurses making midnight calls when the hospital was in need.

Malfoy had never called her directly, however.

Hermione scrambled to cover herself before approaching the fireplace. “Healer Malfoy, is everything alright?”

“Granger,” he answered gruffly. “You woke me up. Not that I mind.”

“Malfoy, are you delirious? I didn’t wake you up. I’m at home. Where you called me.”

He waved her confusion away. “Not you, per se, Granger. Your patronus.”

Dread--burning, numbing dread tickled its way throughout her body.. “M-my patro-?”

“You know, I wasn’t sure if it was still an otter, but then I heard your voice.”

Even through the flames she could see his eyes darken.

“There was no mistaking that sound. I’ve dreamt about it for years.”

Her world started to spin. Draco Malfoy. Childhood enemy. Brilliant colleague. Dreaming about her.

“Still with me, Granger?”

She wasn’t even aware he was still talking.

“Malfoy, look, I--”

“I’m off at 6. Have breakfast with me.” He sounded so sure of himself--of this. But gods, if she wasn’t curious. It would be a lie to say she hadn’t wished things were different.

“Breakfast, then. My place or yours?”
