"The most effective way to ensure Iran remains within the NPT is for the US and Israel to end the illegal war on that country." CND statement on Iran's possible withdrawal from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. #NPT Read: cnduk.org/us-illegal-war-driving-ir…
US illegal war driving Iran’s vote to withdraw from NPT Reports indicate that the Iranian parliament plans to vote on whether to withdraw from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. This would be a significant setback for nuclear non-proliferation in the region. CND has repeatedly raised concerns that the US/Israeli illegal and unprovoked war on Iran – including the bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities – would risk Iran’s withdrawal from the NPT. The US and Israel have continually sabotaged diplomatic efforts to resolve concerns around Iran’s nuclear programme. In 2025, as talks continued between the US and Iran, Israel bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities, in breach of the UN Charter and the International Atomic Energy Agency statute. In response Iran announced that it would reduce cooperation with the IAEA and that its parliament was working on legislation to withdraw Iran from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).In February this year, despite talks securing significant progress – including Iran’s agreement to dilute its enriched uranium stockpile - the US and Israel yet again sabotaged this progress. The illegal bombardment of Iran has killed thousands of civilians through targeted bombing of residential areas and civilian infrastructure. Such sabotage is not new, including Trump’s withdrawal from the landmark 2015 nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Despite the ongoing illegal war on Iran, in September, Britain, France, Germany and the US submitted a resolution to the International Atomic Energy Agency calling for Iran to be reported to the UN Security Council for non-compliance of its safeguarding commitments and not facilitating IAEA inspections. This motion was carried with 23 votes in favour, three votes against and eight abstentions. This is just the latest example of the outrageous nuclear hypocrisy in which nuclear-armed Israel has received no international condemnation or sanctions, despite its refusal to acknowledge its nuclear weapons programme or agree to inspections of its nuclear facilities. Britain has now expanded sanctions again against Iran, imposing new financial, trade and transport restrictions on the country. This will further worsen the living conditions for the Iranian people. The most effective way to ensure Iran remains within the NPT is for the US and Israel to end the illegal war on that country. The US must engage in a diplomatic route to resolve the crisis. The British government should be using its diplomatic influence to lobby the US and Israel to attend the UN conferences to secure a Treaty for a nuclear weapons-free Middle East.

What alternatives can we fund by scrapping Britain’s nukes? ㅤ CND's new #PeopleNotNukes campaign shows that by halting the replacement of Britain’s nuclear weapons, the government could release £240 billion of public funds into the economy over the next 30 years. #TUC26 Some examples 👇

A cost-of-living crisis is looming. Climate breakdown is destroying our planet. Scrapping Britain’s nuclear weapons system would release £240 billion over the next 30 years. Redirecting this money to where it is really needed would make the world safer and transform our society for the better.

Burnham cabinet puts arms dealers and generals at heart of economic policy. Joint statement from CND and @stwc.bsky.social: cnduk.org/burnham-cabi...
Graphic with joint statement from CND and Stop the War Coalition.

Burnham cabinet puts arms dealers and generals at heart of economic policy, Stop the War and CND warn

Now, more than ever, as the world hurtles into endless wars and continents burn, we are appalled by some of the new British prime minister Andy Burnham’s choices for his cabinet.

To hand the Treasury purse strings to a man who demanded a £197bn increase in arms and nuclear weapons spending demonstrates beyond doubt that the military industrial complex is in charge of Burnham’s economic policy. The arms dealers and generals are undoubtedly now in the cabinet.

John Healey’s appointment as chancellor will inevitably mean huge fights over welfare, health and housing to come. None of the social and economic ambitions – tackling the cost of living crisis in particular – that Burnham claims to aspire to will be possible if an ever-growing portion of the economy is devoted to war and destruction.

Giving defence to a man with no discernable experience of the role other than defending Israel against NHS workers who speak out against Israeli genocide is disgraceful. Wes Streeting only claimed to have been “horrified” by the war in Gaza after resigning as health secretary when plotting his own move against Keir Starmer and has called for a cut in welfare spending to fund defence.

We note Burnham’s apology for the Starmer administration’s position on Israel’s actions in Gaza but call on the new prime minister, foreign and defence ministers to make a total break with it by swiftly announcing sanctions and a total end to arms sales.

We note too the prime minister’s commitment to continuing to stand with Ukraine, but an absence of any commitment to seeking a peaceful end to the war with Russia.

Burnham and his new ministers must stop the arms spending, spend our taxes on welfare, not warfare, demand a ceasefire and peace negotiations in the Russia/Ukraine war and for an end to the US’s illegal war on Iran, and name Israel’s actions in Gaza what they are – a genocide.
