exactly! Many many *many* of people who've gone into tech did so in the same way many people went into Law or Medicine: not because they had any particular love of that field, but because their parents raised them "to get a good job" but plug-and-chug "coding" is *dead*, so hope they're adaptable!

Well, at least that probably means it wasn't generated by an LLM!

Oh I can't imagine there will be any problems when hundreds of thousands of single-earner families where the main earner never really liked tech very much, but got a SWE job "because it paid well", and have million dollar mortgages. No problems whatsoever. :(

spending $850 in market research with fully functional (slop) apps is a drop in the bucket. if you're really serious (this person isn't) about this, start your app business by making 4 apps, *market it* a bit, learning from what people didn't like, then repeat 10x. lotto analogy is not super apt

I think it's worse than that. They *actually* believe this, and think it's worth the negative impact on the world to have less capable, less open models out there.

oh see the way *I* resolve the "gif" vs "gif" pronunciation debate is that I always pronounce it "jay-peg"

See while @hikikomorphism.bsky.social hates lazy gif replies, I prefer the more nuanced version, where I merely textually reference the implied gif. As in, my reply to her greatest thread, locked after 10,739 replies, would be: <thats_bait.jpg>

So you mean… we get productivity tech, and labor end up working less rather than capital generating higher returns, for once? Sounds horrible! Good thing management won’t let that last long.

yeah what he needed was the more humbling experience for insufferable nerds: be put in a room full of *even higher achieving* insufferable nerds, who put you in your place and remind you there are *always* going to be a nerd even more insufferable than you, out there somewhere.

there's another word for people who are autodidacts who think it would be counterproductive to go engage with Academia: crank aka crackpot (c.f. the infamous Crackpot Index math.ucr.edu/home/baez/cr... )

LLMs can run many places (only the very biggest need racks of GPUs), and agents built on them certainly can run fairly autonomously (they operate for hours to days w/o any human involvement). The OpenAI incidents were evals configured improperly, but doesn't detract from what the agents can do.
100
jake @yetanotheruseless.com · 27/09/2026
except we do have models which can hack into companies, government websites, probably lots of other places, basically autonomously, so feel free to not call them "proper ai" all you want, but they can already do significant damage by telling them "go find <thing X>, don't stop until you get it"

aw c'mon, don't be such a wimp. walk it off!

jake @yetanotheruseless.com · 27/09/2026
I'd imagine this would flow forward in the same way as payments: users grant permissions to agents, who are acting on their behalf, but doing so with granted permission to do stuff with Disney's systems. Disney says "I'll make sure agents don't go crazy on our stuff: you users have no liability"
120
jake @yetanotheruseless.com · 27/09/2026
The payment processors and retailers already have plans to handle this (generally involves retailers having users grant scoped permissions [time bound, category-scoped, spend limits, payment instrument preferences], and they record what the agent does, and negotiate w cc co’s on user’s behalf)

I basically never run into the "Cyber, Biological..." check while using codex, but just got one while doing a particle cosmology calculation of tunneling to create baby universes on a thermal weakly hyperbolic background hack USG? no probs! we're making sure rogue agents don't restart the universe

because we are social apes, and like watching other apes do stuff? this explains much (but not all)of our interest in art, fiction, music as well. perhaps even applies to math.

well, it's certainly anathema to what they *would like* things to work, but those of us in ML since around that time were like, "ooooh shit, self-supervised learning gets you *so much* data, v v niiiice!" because everything in the supervised ML era was *so* bottlenecked by lack of labeled data
