It’s his dark eyes, the way they narrow as I hide the ball in my glove. It’s in the stillness of his body and his tight grip on the bat. He’s dissecting each move I make, but he’s not seeing me.

The day is hot for spring in Oregon, and beneath his batting helmet, sweat dampens the collar of his shirt, brown skin glistening. The back of my own neck burns from the heat, but I feel it from a distance, like the sunburn is already a memory.

When Ari looks at me like a stranger, I don’t know where to put my feet.

It would be easier if I could look away, but since it’s not an option, I forget the thought, squeezing the baseball between my fingers until my hand aches. My worn glove hides my trembling.

I take a deep breath. Steady. I can do this.

Today is the day I strike him out. Today, I’m going to win.

Ari blinks once, slow. I throw.

He swings, and I can tell from the angle, the sound the bat makes when it connects—home run. Cheers sound all over the field, teammates turning Ari’s name into a chant as he jogs through the bases, his mouth a wide grin.

I slip off the glove, press my shaking hands together, and try to make them still.
