Or on the level of days reminding us to respect things that are inherently fabulous – like the World Mother Earth Day? At any rate, the fact that a day is needed for afro hair says much about the history of its denigration. I explore this history and present in the essay "Hair as Freedom". 2/2

Scholarship on Nigeria (both its failings and successes) luckily is plentiful. What I rarely come across, however, is comparative scholarship, say comparing Nigeria's historical trajectory to Burkina Faso's to understand why they have produced such different societies. #Africasky #AfricanResearch

It made clear for me something about Burkina Faso. A tragedy like Adichie's could occur there - error is human. The callousness that accompanied it, however, I couldn't imagine. I would never apply Adichie's criticism to that country. In my two decades there I saw many examples of moral grandeur.
111
Yarri Kamara @yarrikamara.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
That indictment comes from Adichie's book "Dream Count", written long before the absolute tragedy of losing her son to medical error and being subjected to callous treatment by an uncaring healthcare system, despite being monied. That line stayed with me when I first read the book.

But your WWII hunch could be right. May be check out some of the immediate post-colonial films - eg. by Sembene Ousmane or Djibril Diop Mambety, both from Senegal, to see if there are spaghetti references.
020
Yarri Kamara @yarrikamara.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Not sure. I'd assumed that spaghetti was popular/desirable in Burkina because a significant number of Burkinabe had migrated to Italy. Ghana also has an Italy-based diaspora. That said most of the spaghetti sold in Burkina in the 2010s was from North Africa, if I recall well.
121
Yarri Kamara @yarrikamara.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Burkinabe filmmaker Dani Kouyaté already pointed out West African fascination with spaghetti in his 1990s film "Keita, l'héritage du griot". Ghana's catching up? Or a trend that died is coming back?

The right’s exploitation of the Ceuta migrant ‘crisis’ almost guarantees that it will happen again | Ruben Andersson
The EU’s panic and the lack of solidarity emboldens smugglers and the far right – and makes Spain even more vulnerable, says Ruben Andersson, professor of social anthropology
021
Yarri Kamara @yarrikamara.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
De-solidarisation with Spain was swift, and the rush to attack Spain’s recent migration policies overrode critical questions of why and how such an unprecedented surge could occur. If dividing Europe (a divided Europe is a weak Europe) was the aim of the migrant surge, mission accomplished.
030
Yarri Kamara @yarrikamara.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
If the Ceuta migrant surge was orchestrated, behind that orchestration lay the idea that the average European politician is terrified of being seen as weak on immigration. Here Europe completely failed to take any higher ground.

Behind Infantino’s plan lay the conviction that anyone is attracted by more money. UEFA unanimously decided to take the higher ground on that and threatened a boycott on principles. Against the united European front, Infantino backed down.
