Our new algorithm will be integrated in the McMule programme (which celebrated its 10th Anniversary earlier this year) mule-tools.gitlab.io. In McMule, we only simulate scattering at fixed-order (usually α²) so this project would be a major extension.

This behaviour can be used to build a Monte Carlo event generator that can simulate the emission of arbitrarily many soft photons. As part of this project, I want to use what we know about the next-to-leading power behaviour, i.e. the 1/E term, to extend these simulations.

The YFS approximation works very well and was critical e.g. at LEP collider at CERN in the 90s. However, it only captures the leading power soft behaviour at 1/E² (there's a great thread by @martinmbauer.bsky.social on the Other Site explaining this structure x.com/martinmbauer...)

This is a more technical thread, introducing one of the most beautiful results from Steven Weinberg: The soft photon theorem It answers the question why massless spin 1 bosons are associated with conserved charges and why massless spin 2 bosons interact like a graviton 🧵1/19

For many experiments such as the proposed #MUonE experiment at @cern.bsky.social, emission of low-energy (soft) photons are a main source of theoretical uncertainties. This is usually modelled using the approach by Yennie, Frautschi and Suura (YFS) inspirehep.net/literature/2...

Very excited to be leading an #ERCStG project at the @liverpooluni.bsky.social! We will develop a new kind of Monte Carlo tool for next-generation precision #particlephysics experiments that improves how photons are simulated. A brief 🧵

The media must be held to account. The rascist, relentless hounding of Jason Arday trussed up as some kind of "trial by public opinion" is unconscionable. My heart goes out to his family at this time. Academia has to do better. We have to do better.

Have worried about how everyone is just shrugging their shoulders about the inevitability of the 'AI' rollout (even if they see its problems). Nice to see some pushback by @karenhao.bsky.social, framing 'AI' as the political project it so clearly is

wow — the preprint host, arxiv, is banning authors for a year if they submit papers with hallucinated citations 🤖

We have recently clarified our penalties for this. If a submission contains incontrovertible evidence that the authors did not check the results of LLM generation, this means we can't trust anything in the paper. 3/

The penalty is a 1-year ban from arXiv followed by the requirement that subsequent arXiv submissions must first be accepted at a reputable peer-reviewed venue. 4/

Examples of incontrovertible evidence: hallucinated references, meta-comments from the LLM ("here is a 200 word summary; would you like me to make any changes?"; "the data in this table is illustrative, fill it in with the real numbers from your experiments") end/"

I made this Foundation-themed tote bag for a friend but kept forgetting to actually post the pictures.. the art work is mostly from the recent TV show because I couldn't find original work by Asimov. Very happy with how it turned out, esp. since this was my first attempt at goldwork 🪡
A black tote bag with the imperial coat-of-arms from the TV show Foundation embroidered on in yellow thread. The lower half of the bag has the word FOUNDATION on it using the stylised font of the TV show. The shoulder strap of the bag has the owner's name in Elvish characters embroidered on using copper threadA closeup of the coat-of-arms of the tote bag. It shows a circular emblem with a central shape resembling a starburst that radiates six lines towards the edge. The central starburst contains a cross in made using red wire stitched to the fabric. On either side are two smaller stars

Fully agree, every time I played with it, it was also extremely useless. The only thing it could do halfway well is proofreading and there are less problematic alternatives. If the future really has to rely on large-scale intellectual property theft, I'm not sure I want any part in it..

the check is done client-side by polling a specific bsky.app endpoint as @uncenter.dev's link pointed out. I guess the neatest solution for android or iOS would be to recompile the app (which is opensource) without this check..?

Pretending that ND people just can't help themselves but be repugnant is a very harmful stereotype, making this excuse deeply ableist! Holding harassers to account is important and so is not buying their excuses. kudos to @maitlis.bsky.social & @jonsopel1.bsky.social for pointing this out 😊

Blaming behaviour like this (or that Nazi salute) on being neurodivergent (autism in this case) is extremely offensive to the vast, vast majority of ND folk who don't go around harassing people.. makes me sick every time someone tries this 😡
