I am writing to formally invite you to visit the site in Larbert, within my region, where an application has been made for a hyper-scale AI Data Centre.

I believe a visit would provide you with a valuable opportunity to meet with local business owners, campaigners, and residents who have serious concerns about this proposal.

Since being re-elected to the Scottish Parliament my inbox has been inundated with correspondence from constituents. Digital privacy and surveillance aside, why I think this ban on social media for under 16s is an awful idea:

As a very nerdy neurodivergent queer person, when I was a child, was extremely anxious and heavily bullied in school, the internet allowed me to discover more about who I am, find people more like me and community.

This helped me build confidence that I couldn’t in school and finally accept myself for who I am.

Truthfully? I may have not survived my childhood without it. I know for CERTAIN I am not the only one. I want kids who are like what I was like to be safe, and to grow up to be functioning adults.

“We were fine when I was young” - No. YOU were fine. But kids like me were ostracised, sent away to facilities, were never able to properly develop into functioning adults, or took their lives.

Making YouTube videos from 13 years old helped me discover my creativity and passion for making content. It let me teach myself valuable skills like editing and graphic design. It let me foster friendships, create and tell stories, roleplay with friends. It made me ambitious, it gave me experience.

It obviously was not without flaws - I encountered weird people, but because of PARENTING I knew what to look out for and what to avoid.

It also meant I’m now more aware of things like scams online. I’m better with online safety. Schools should have mandatory classes on this as a part of their main curriculum - like RE, Home Ech, sex ed, etc.

The internet is a core part of life. Nearly all careers rely on it, nearly all government programs rely on it. Healthcare, transport, so on - all use the internet, so it should be effectively taught about. Banning access only has the opposite intended effect.

So, on top of the government using children as an excuse to track what we do online, on top of the concerns about identification being leaked by hackers - that’s why this is terrible, dangerous, and stupid. That’s why this is another nail in the coffin of Labour’s reputati…
