Wouldn’t the government have to prove that they did it for profit? And if so, did they then resume coverage in order to lose money?

When I was a kid I thought that if you survived your execution, God was weighing in on its legitimacy. Now that I am all grown up and opposed to capital punishment in every case, I still think it’s the kind of thing a God ought to do.

#ResistanceRoots Hiroshi “Hershey” Miyamura was born on this day in 1925 in Gallup, N.M. He is known for being the only soldier whose Medal of Honor was classified Top Secret while he was held as a POW. His story is one of patriotism, bravery, loyalty and humble service against incredible odds. /1
Hiroshi Miyamura was a Staff Sergeant. This photo was taken after Miyamura’s repatriation during Operation Big Switch in August 1953. After spending 28 months as a prisoner of war, he crossed the Demilitarized Zone into the U.N. command center at Panmunjom’s Freedom Village for medical processing, debriefings and transition out of the theater as a newly released POW. Miyamura’s Medal of Honor citation does not adequately express his dedication and self-sacrifice. His acts of courage were focused entirely on protecting his men. During his 28 months as a POW, he grieved over those he believed were lost and felt guilt for failing to protect them. After receiving the Medal of Honor, he viewed himself as its custodian, stating that he wore it not for himself, but on behalf of all the men who never made it home. When he died in November 2022, he was buried with full military honors next to his beloved wife, Terry, leaving behind a legacy of humility and quiet citizenship.

I remember the first time I had sweetbreads. Cafe De Schmear, Petaluma, Ca. 1983 or 4. Sautéed sweetbreads in a perigourdine sauce with mixed mashed potatoes and carrots. I don’t remember the vegetable, but I’ve never forgotten the meal. I wasn’t very foodie then, but it set me on a path.

Wrote about how Trump’s tantrums over the Supreme Court reveal the not so hidden subtext of what Republicans expect from the justices. Also a mention of how Supreme Court politics resemble the Calciopoli scandal. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
As is nearly always the case with the president’s accusations, this was an illuminating projection. Trump fears that public pressure on the Supreme Court can sway the justices and how they rule. So when they don’t side with him, he assumes that’s what happened, and he trashes the Court in the hope that it will side with him the next time. He views criticism of the Supreme Court much as he views laws in general: When Trump or one of his allies wants to do something, such as use taxpayer dollars for cultish campaign ads, it’s legal. When his opponents want to do something, it’s illegal
