The Ultra series fuuuuuuuucksss. Especially when you look at it as more of a Doctor Who-esque science fiction monster series as opposed to the superhero series it keeps getting promoted as in the US.

Ultraman has been flirting with arthouse/New Wave/avant garde stuff since its inception! Akio Jissoji literally made a Godard fanfilm for one of his Ultraseven episodes.

Cut a joint teaser for both Dread Planet & Quinacridone and my friend locked her cut of a Dread Planet BTS video that she shot when we did our big city rampage shoot. Super excited for everyone to see this stuff in the near-ish future.

I was specifically asked to channel the design from the first theatrical movie! I looooooved the green lighting in the city scene at the end and really wanted to lean into that look here.

I've only ever watched the first lil 20 minute movie as research for this commission but the animation was GORGEOUS.

This ranks up there with Soviet Rodan as one of the top five dumbest things I've ever made. If you still haven't seen Ultraman Mebius, do yourself the favor!!

The breadth of tones across the entire Ultra series is truly remarkable. The sheer variety of stories and creatures are why it's my favorite franchise, hands down.

My client commissioned this piece in remembrance of their late father, who originally introduced them to the Ultraman series and whose favorite monster was Jamila. Really honored to have been able to paint this for them.

Again, I'm trying to figure out how this came to be a trope for witches in Japanese media. Like this hairstyle feels like their version of the big black hat you see in stereotypical depictions of witches in the west.

I feel like most of the guesses so far may or may not have SOME merit but I also feel like there's a missing link still. Like even if it's TECHNICALLY true, this and/or Twin Tail feels like the Australopithecus to Bandora's Homo Sapiens and I'm trying to locate, like, Homo Habilus or somethin.

XENOFAUNA @xenofauna.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

Fucking WHAT. Is there a source for this somewhere???? My friend and I made this joke a few hours ago but we were like "there is NO FUCKING WAY."

321 3

XENOFAUNA @xenofauna.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

HEY SO LIKE... does anyone know why Japanese designers seem to LOOOOVE this specific, like, twin-tail sort of hairstyle when they're designing witches?? Like surely there is some common ancestor given that this keeps happening over and over??

Screenshots from our upcoming practical effects monster short DREAD PLANET, including some of the new sequences we completed this past weekend. There are a couple more pickups I'm wanting to shoot to finesse the film's middle section but I feel really good about its current state.

Just got a look at an early cut of the BTS video put together from this shoot and I'm really excited to be able to release it alongside the film itself when the time comes.

Lord, the OST for The Man Who Stole the Sun is SO good. Still reeling over the fact that my favorite bit of Eva 2.22 was just straight lifted from a WAY crazier movie.
