It’s still my favourite in the series. Unmatched atmosphere, unironically more challenging than most other KH games without Critical Mode, and a level of detail that means I still find new things in it even now.

It just sucks that whenever we have a Lyon, or an Arvis or an Edelgard, they inevitably get swept aside for a much less interesting figure behind the curtain. Just let them be the problem!

Even Lyon comes shackled to Formotis. I think FE is way too shackled to the same old archetypes. Red Emperor, with an Evil Cult behind them, trying to revive the Problem Dragon. I think Ashnard was the last one who was both decent, and didn’t have a shittjer villain pulling his strings.

(Also, if you answer Berkut, then perish, this is not a Berkut friendly zone).

In all seriousness, how long has it been since Fire Emblem had good villains? Really not enjoying the antagonists in FW, but looking back, even when an FE game had a solid villain, there’s often a greater one who sucks.

Just as a general rule of thumb try to keep in mind is that sometimes people just be saying literal garbage to get a rise out of you, especially on the internet. And believe me i get it, i get riled up sometimes too, but just try to remember. No one is asking you to be perfect, just to try.

Which is funny when a common (somewhat fair) criticism of the rest of the game is that there’s not enough FE battles. But I don’t find constant skirmishes are a good substitute because they lack the good map design and enemy placement of a proper FE battle (I have the same gripe with Echoes).

I will agree that, while I enjoy his characters, Dietrich’s been my least favourite route to actually play so far because I agree the constant skirmishes are a slog.

Like Dietrich still wants to go to every dungeon to level up and get unique rewards from chests. So you’re still gonna be doing a fair bit of travelling. So make you sure you’re using it mid travel.

Truth be told I’m still kind of figuring this out myself but the way it seems to work is make sure you use Answerer’s Cry whenever you’re going to and from a dungeon or town. You’ll get fights at different levels based on where you are on the map, which means more renown as a reward.

I definitely think some of the stories suffer from weird pacing because of how long it is. Leda’s route had great characters but it had a lot of chapters that felt like nothing was really progressing or felt repetitive.

My favorite 3D Sonics have the arcadey appeal of a Sega Rally or Daytona. They're purpose-built for replay value and tend to get docked for being "too short". This game only has nine zones, so the "track selection" may seem small, but the mechanical depth and skill mastery are infinite.

But even with the proviso is ‘KH is still for kids so it can’t be too crazy,’ I still feel BBS drops the ball on some its character even comparing it to the previous games.

It’s one of the entries where I most feel the constraints of KH really trying to be one of Square’s more accessible series for younger audiences. Because BBS really pulls its punches on some promising ideas.

For a tragedy about flawed heroes, BBS is weirdly scared of making anyone unlikeable tbh.

Honestly I agree. I think SHf’s multiple replay system was a bit too ambitious for the resources the devs clearly had. But the atmosphere was really strong, the combat walks a nice line of crunchy and meaningfully limited. And once you had the full picture, the story is one of the series’ best.
