Fly agaric mushrooms, Amanita muscaria, in a weedy lawn. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/10/shin... #VancouverIsland #Mushrooms #Fungi #Red #NaturePhotography

Two young fly agaric mushrooms; the larger one is still new enough to be domed; snuggled up beside it is a smaller button, almost spherical. The mushrooms have a brilliant red cap, sprinkled with whitish lumps, or "warts", the remains of the universal veil. The stem is thick and pure white. The mushrooms are growing in an urban lawn; dried oak leaves come from a tree a few metres away.

A grainy photo taken in the shadow of tall evergreens; Douglas-fir trunks, with Big-leaf maple leaves in front, in fall colours, yellow and orange. On the side of the nearest trunk, against the light, there's a Northern flicker, Colaptes auratus, pecking at the bark. Background, beyond the tree trunks, cloudy skies, bare branches.

A view from a dock across from a fish packing plant, including only the pilings beneath the plant and a raft with pipes and tanks beside them at the top of the photo. In the water beneath, the buildings (dark green, blue) are reflected, as well as the green and orange and grey hoses and pipes, the rusty tanks, the brown metal pilings, and the deep shade underneath the building, all twisted into squiggles by the current of the incoming tide.

On a blue plastic float under a dock, anemones and feather-duster worms have established themselves. The anemones, Metridium sp., are short, white and cream, with white frilled tentacles. The worms, Vancouver Feather-duster polychaetes, Eudistylia vancouveri, live in long tubes, not seen from this angle; what we see are the deep red, pom-pom-like, tentacle heads at the mouth of each tube. The water beneath them is clear, green in the shadow, sky-blue in the light.

A harbour seal pup, in quiet water beside a dock. Only the face is out of water; the seal has his eyes closed, even though at the moment, his eyes are in shadow. None of the youngsters seemed to appreciate the bright sunlight.
He's grey and whitish, with a black nose, white whiskers. The mottled body can be seen under the swirling water. The water is clear, blue.

Pacific Silverweed, Potentilla anserina, with one yellow flower. Pnnate (compound along a central stalk) leaves with toothed edges. Behind this, there are a couple of stems of Pacific willow, Rumex transitorius; these have tiny clumps of pink or pink-tipped flowers. And there are a few leaves of wild strawberry; three leaves on the tip of pink stems. All these are edible plants native to Vancouver Island.

One floats facing to the left; the one behind faces away from us, but turns her head to see who's there. Her wings make two round mounds, like the top of a heart shape.

The bush is second- and third-growth evergreen forest, mostly smaller trees. In front, a weedy area beside the road; grasses, Scotch broom, fireweed gone to seed, salal.

Just a very old Douglas-fir cone. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/09/no-n... #VancouverIsland #Plants #Trees #Moss #NaturePhotography

An old fir cone, crumbling at the edges, black and grey and spotted with the beginnings of lichens, with its scales opened out; some brown needles have fallen into the gaps. It is a Douglas-fir cone, which is usually apparent by the spiky "mouse hind feet and tails" that protrude from underneath each scale; but here, most of them have rotted away. The cone lies on a bed of yellowish, hairy moss.

Did u know? Bees(& many other insects)sleep in flowers. There's lots of reasons for this: the centre of a flower is warmer than surrounding air temp; convenience of waking up on your breakfast; predator protection from the flower colour/pattern camouflage; protection against bad weather. 🌿🌱🇬🇧🌱🌍🪲🐝
