I photograph and write about the world I see around me here on Vancouver Island: the forests and hllls, things green and wet, the none- to multi-legged critters that scramble, ooze, and slither on our beaches, birds and the occasional beast.

Young harbour seal, Brown's Bay. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/09/seal... #VancouverIsland #Animals #Wildlife #MarineWildlife #HarbourSeal #NaturePhotography
A harbour seal pup, in quiet water beside a dock. Only the face is out of water; the seal has his eyes closed, even though at the moment, his eyes are in shadow. None of the youngsters seemed to appreciate the bright sunlight.
He's grey and whitish, with a black nose, white whiskers. The mottled body can be seen under the swirling water. The water is clear, blue.

Spider webs have existed for at least 100 million years, as witnessed in a find of Early Cretaceous amber from Sussex. This spiny orb weaver spider filmed by Rachel Barry is patiently demonstrating how they build them. Original post

Three edible native plants growing together. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/09/nati... #VancouverIsland #Plants #NativePlants #Flowers #Bloomscrolling #NaturePhotography
Pacific Silverweed, Potentilla anserina, with one yellow flower. Pnnate (compound along a central stalk) leaves with toothed edges. Behind this, there are a couple of stems of Pacific willow, Rumex transitorius; these have tiny clumps of pink or pink-tipped flowers. And there are a few leaves of wild strawberry; three leaves on the tip of pink stems. All these are edible plants native to Vancouver Island.

Canada geese, Courtenay estuary. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/09/unex... #VancouverIsland #Birds #Waterfowl #NaturePhotography
Two Canada geese in quiet harbour; blades of yellowish grass float or stand above the surface of blue water. The geese are brown, with white breasts and throat patches, black heads and necks. One floats facing to the left; the one behind faces away from us, but turns her head to see who's there. Her wings make two round mounds, like the top of a heart shape.

Lines in the sky, lines reflected in the water, meet beyond the left edge of the photo. In the centre, a low line of evergreens is reflected in the water of the lake. At the lower edge, tall rushes seem to point in the same general direction, off to the left.

Chubby bear cubs beside a logging road. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/09/met-... #VancouverIsland #Animals #NativeWildlife #Wildlife #Bears #NaturePhotography
Two small black bears, back to the camera, heading off into the bush. They're following their mother and another cub, out of sight now. The bush is second- and third-growth evergreen forest, mostly smaller trees. In front, a weedy area beside the road; grasses, Scotch broom, fireweed gone to seed, salal.

Just a very old Douglas-fir cone. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/09/no-n... #VancouverIsland #Plants #Trees #Moss #NaturePhotography
An old fir cone, crumbling at the edges, black and grey and spotted with the beginnings of lichens, with its scales opened out; some brown needles have fallen into the gaps. It is a Douglas-fir cone, which is usually apparent by the spiky "mouse hind feet and tails" that protrude from underneath each scale; but here, most of them have rotted away. The cone lies on a bed of yellowish, hairy moss.

A very tiny mushroom, rather like a tan dressmaker's pin. About 1.5 cm. tall. It grows on the forest floor, between fragments of moss and Douglas-fir twigs. The brown arrow shape at the top is one of the tiny "mouse tails" (so imagined) that hide beneath the scales of a Douglas-fir cone.

Can you find the grasshopper? New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/.../09/hide-... #VancouverIsland #Insects #Camouflage #Invertebrates #NaturePhotography
An area of stony ground; small to medium stones, mostly grey or brownish, with dried sticks and grass stems scattered over them. In front, out of focus, and hiding some of the stones, are reddish heads of dry roadside weeds. And somewhere in there, there's a Pallid-winged grasshopper, a darker grey than most of the stones, not quite blending in. (Look for its eyes.)

Red mosses in the rain. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/09/red-... #VancouverIsland #Moss #Mosstodon #NaturePhotography
Round, pincushion-shaped mounds of moss on a sedimentary rock outcrop. Most of the moss is red or orange, even though it's been raining for days. Some is a dark green. And some has turned bright green, as mosses usually do when they're wet.

Growing over a sedimentary rock outcrop; a lichen? A slime-mold? What is it? New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/09/what... #VancouverIsland #Lichens #Fungi #Slimes #NaturePhotography
A cliff face, conglomerate rock, with some vegetation to show the size; cedar branches and salal leaves. A pale bluish white substance covers a large area of the rock, covering the rock matrix, the embedded stones and the holes where stones have fallen out. Around the edges, it branches out into a network of winding lines.

Fall Field Cricket, Gryllus pennsylvanicus, on his way to tonight's gig. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/09/midn... #VancouverIsland #Insects #Invertebrates #InverteFest #NaturePhotography
A cricket on a carpet. He's black, with reddish hints in his legs. Black and shiny. HIs forewings are deeply sculptured; he will be producing tonight's serenade by scraping one against the other, raising them to make a sound box. About 2 chirps per second, 62 decibels up close (in a midnight bedroom, for example). The two spikes at the rear are cerci; females also have a long ovipositor between them. Only the males sing.

Myra Creek, above Myra Falls, from the top of a cliff. In the rain. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/08/disp... #VancouverIsland #Landscapes #Water #Weather #NaturePhotography
A glimpse of a pool of deep green water at the base of a rocky cliff. Only the foot of the cliff on the far side is visible; in front, to the right, can be seen the top of the cliff below the pond; yellow mosses on top, darker moss and some plants clinging to the vertical face of the rock. Below the pool, the water rushes down over shiny rocks. Looking closely, raindrops are visible against the green of the pool. On the left, there's the trunk of a spindly fir; something to hold onto to prevent joining the creek far below.

Buttle Lake in the rain. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/08/rain... #Landscapes #Weather #Skies #Clouds #NaturePhotography
A grey, misty day; hills and sky and water all in muted blues and greys. Two hillsides frame the lake; in the gap between them, three layers of hills fade from greenish to bluish to just barely there. The lake is rippled; there's a bit of wind. Cellar spider, a week ago, and tonight. Look what she's done! New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/08/happ... #VancouverIsland #Spiders #Arachnids #Invertebrates #InverteFest #NaturePhotography
A cellar spider, hanging from a wooden carving. She's light brown, with long, long legs with black knees. And a large, round abdomen, full of whitish lumps. I wondered if they were future eggs. Pholcus phalangioides. And here she is a week later, up under a pale blue ceiling. Now she's skinny. And she carries a bag of round eggs in her mouth. She will carry them this way until they hatch. So the lumps in her abdomen were the makings of the eggs.

A large sunflower, half ripe; the petals are withered, but the seeds are still growing. It stands up under the eaves of a house (2nd story), bent over by its weight so that it faces the ground. It's surrounded by large, floppy leaves; speckles of pollen coat the leaf directly beneath the flower head. The stalk is thick, slightly hairy. There's another sunflower, still small, growing behind this plant, and the petals of a third at the far right.
The sky overhead is pale grey; there's a cedar tree on the far left.

A Black Vine weevil on a red placemat. She* faces the left lower corner. Her compound eyes bulge out on either side of her long rostrum; there's a trace of spider web still there. One antenna visible, the other moving too rapidly. Note the feet; two furry toes, and a long central claw, good for grabbing and holding on. Behind the head, is the knobby pronotum. Did u know? Bees(& many other insects)sleep in flowers. There's lots of reasons for this: the centre of a flower is warmer than surrounding air temp; convenience of waking up on your breakfast; predator protection from the flower colour/pattern camouflage; protection against bad weather. 🌿🌱🇬🇧🌱🌍🪲🐝

An inchworm, one of the Geometrid moth larvae, 4 mm. long. He has jumped onto my finger, and hangs downward, halfway through his "step", where he folds himself in half, after bringing the head up to the finger as far as he can reach. Then, he'll bring the rear legs up to just behind his forelegs. And repeat. He's greyish, brownish; is as thin as a sewing thread, has three pairs of legs visible just behind the head.
