In short: you can have decent rent controls whilst *reducing* the likelihood of landlord sell offs (and therefore evictions). The government's current position is untenable.

Why would the Government build reservoirs for private companies? Is Reform suggesting some sort of leasing arrangement? Or is this is a subsidy to private corporations? Politicians can't duck the reality that to sort out water means you need it under public control and ownership. Get on with it.

Interesting to see the Heritage Foundation trying out a new attack vector on UBI. Apparently poverty is something that makes men out of boys and so UBI "emasculates" and "feminizes" men. The evidence is clearly in support of UBI, so they need to try and drag it into the culture wars like usual.

Rent controls aren't just desirable - they're viable
98.8% of landlords made a profit in 2024, their worst year. New data shows rent controls would still leave them in the black — and save renters £1,200 a year.

Remember that the tuition fee rise just about covers the simultaneous increase in employer national insurance contributions for universities, so cutting teaching grants on this basis means universities on life support being subject to a shake down and being expected to say thanks for the privilege.
