This new trajectory is less stringent than the 'Announced, less stringent policies' in modelling from December by @climateinstitute.bsky.social and @naviusresearch.bsky.social -- leaving us way off track for meeting our emission reductions commitments. See: climateinstitute.ca/wp-content/u...
Line chart titled "Canada is not on track to any of its emissions targets." National emissions in megatonnes of CO2-equivalent, 2005 to 2050.
Historical emissions decline from about 770 Mt in 2005 to roughly 660 Mt by 2025, fluctuating along the way.
From 2025, five projection scenarios diverge. A yellow band marks Canada's 2030 and 2035 target range, roughly 400 to 460 Mt. A grey wedge marks the net-zero pathway, narrowing to zero by 2050.
Every projection sits well above the target range.

The new path largely pauses the headline price through 2030. After 2030, the headline price rises slowly to $140 and introduces a new trading floor (reaching $110 in 2040)
Line chart titled "Canada's industrial carbon price, rolled back." Three trajectories in Canadian dollars per tonne of CO2-equivalent, 2020 to 2040.
Previous federal benchmark (red line): rises from $30 in 2020 to $170 in 2030, then ends.
New headline price (dark blue line): $95 in 2025, rising slowly to $115 in 2030, $130 in 2035, $140 in 2040.
New credit trading floor (light blue line): $60 in 2030, rising to $110 by 2040.
The new trajectory sits well below the previous benchmark and extends a decade further.

California wants to subsidize sustainable aviation fuel. But when policies interact, the result may be higher gas prices, lost road funding, and small emissions gains Check out our new blog on @ucenergyinstitute.bsky.social digging into the proposal: energyathaas.wordpress.com/2026/02/23/h...

Want lower power bills and a cleaner grid? Interprovincial transmission could be a true nation-building project. Great read from @blakeshaffer.bsky.social and Philipe Dunsky

Agreed! This is an important issue and we need transparent data on these markets. Clean Prosperity just released a report that suggests growing divergence for EPCs below headline prices under AB's TIER program citing price info from "anonymous market participants" cleanprosperity.ca/wp-content/u...

“Canada is such a northern country, don’t we want a little global warming?” I often hear. In a nutshell, NO. We’re warming 2x faster than the rest of the world, driving extreme heat, flood, and sea level rise we are not prepared for. The wildfire season started in Feb this year. Feb! #canadaday

Awesome defense by @wscott.bsky.social using an impressive array of methods to look at emission, cost, innovation, and distributional effects of overlapping climate policies in California. Well worth the trip from the East to the South Bay!

This chart shows annual hours of smoke-filled skies in Calgary from 1953 to 2023. As the first wildfire smoke of the 2024 season blew in this week, it's hard to convey the sadness it elicited in a lot of folks. There's a growing realization this is our new reality. And a genuine sense of mourning.
