RIP Esther Rantzen (some helpful info in the alt text if you fancy a click)

Michael Feast (I think) and Esther Rantzen judging the disco dancing competition in The Music Machine, directed in 1979 by Ian ‘Who Dares Wins’ Sharpe who previously worked on That’s Life which is, I’d assume, how Esther wound up in a disco cash-in movie

If you’re in the market for a fun fact, you might like to know that Esther Rantzen and Clark Peters (aka Lester Freamon in The Wire) both made their big screen debut together in Brit disco-sploitation movie The Music Machine set in the club which would become Koko www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmv1...

Some of us have been into Transformers before they were even Transformers 😉

A strange swan song for such a cinematic titan, though if he was going to play any kids cartoon character, at least it’s a planet eating mega-robot

But seriously, what did you do on Sexy Beast?

I’m well overdue a rewatch. I especially love Tinker

Have you tried flax seeds?

Doesn't everyone remember exactly where they were and what they were doing the day Orson Welles died?

wrongtom @wrongtom.bsky.social · 16h

Obviously I know McShane wasn't yet Lovejoy. In fact there was a clear tectonic shift in the field of acting between Welles dying soon after recording his final role as Unicron in Transformers The Movie, and McShane debuting the following year as the iconic philandering antiques dealer

Arguably the greatest track to feature the guy who played Lovejoy who was having fish and chips with his wife when Trevor Horn approached him asking "I need a voice, and Orson Welles is dead". Welles in fact died 11 days after the US single release

Due to the amount I've times I've indignantly replied "NO!" when Alexa asks me if I'd like to sign up for Amazon Music to listen to [insert artist I just wanted to listen to one song by] any time I'd like, I'm pretty sure I'll be one of the first up against the wall when the AI uprising happens

Also featured Courtney Pine and, to my surprise when I watched some live footage before interviewing Cymande, my old mate Vic Martin on organ. They’d not spoken since the 80s so I put them back in touch

And what about "intead"? 😉

And remarkably it’s not even the main duo’s vocation. They’ve both been lawyers for the past 40+ years

I was very lucky to have caught (without even realising it at the time) various original members jamming at a pub I used to frequent in Brixton back in the 90s. So glad the main duo got back to it in recent years though. They're lovely people

Ever wondered what connects Mighty Sparrow to NYC disco sensation Andrea True? Of course you haven't, but I'll tell you anyway... Sparrow's brass section appeared on More More More thanks to the song's complicated birth in Jamaica. Read the whole messy story here thequietus.com/opinion-and-...

With the multitrack and tapes that were to become
'More More More packed, both Diamond brothers boarded a plane to Kingston where Truden had hired Ken Khouri's hallowed Federal Studio, a Jamaican institution responsible for key moments in the evolution of reggae including Ken Boothes 1974 international smash 'Everything I Own'. It probably didn't mean much to a couple of hard rockers, but Khouri gave them access to the cream of the Caribbean's instrumentalists.
Trinidadian Trumpeter James Smart and saxophonist Enrique Moore joined them fresh from a session with calypso legend Mighty Sparrow. All that was left now was the vocals - except they still had no lyrics.

...and then collected on Morgan Khan's Electro comps in the UK. Most artists I've interviewed for my Electro book didn't even know what electro was. One even forgot I'd called it electro during the interview and asked "what's this got to do with techno?"

060

I should add to this that while Electro UK faked a British electro movement, there were plenty of UK electro records at the time. Also, there wasn't really an electro scene in the States, just loads of disparate tracks made by jazz musicians, techno pioneers, post-punks etc

I must have some kind of babel fish activated because it all looks English to me

Vocals aside, I've never liked the production/mix on this one, it's a bit of a mess. I think Blacker by Ballistic Brothers is probably the definitive use of the uptempo bit, though I love this one which looped the uptempo bit just before the often sampled uptempo bit www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4GM...

That’s a good point, its never really occurred to me which one might’ve come first. I wonder if Andy Cornell took Wilson’s electro influence into the ACR studio session, or vice versa

011

For years I assumed that Real Time was loosely based on Let's Dance by Bowie, but Greg Wilson later told me the bass riff was inspired by Cymande's Bra, so that's another one added to my Cymande musical family tree which is getting out of hand now
