Michael Feast (I think) and Esther Rantzen judging the disco dancing competition in The Music Machine, directed in 1979 by Ian ‘Who Dares Wins’ Sharpe who previously worked on That’s Life which is, I’d assume, how Esther wound up in a disco cash-in movie

Obviously I know McShane wasn't yet Lovejoy. In fact there was a clear tectonic shift in the field of acting between Welles dying soon after recording his final role as Unicron in Transformers The Movie, and McShane debuting the following year as the iconic philandering antiques dealer

Ever wondered what connects Mighty Sparrow to NYC disco sensation Andrea True? Of course you haven't, but I'll tell you anyway... Sparrow's brass section appeared on More More More thanks to the song's complicated birth in Jamaica. Read the whole messy story here thequietus.com/opinion-and-...
With the multitrack and tapes that were to become
'More More More packed, both Diamond brothers boarded a plane to Kingston where Truden had hired Ken Khouri's hallowed Federal Studio, a Jamaican institution responsible for key moments in the evolution of reggae including Ken Boothes 1974 international smash 'Everything I Own'. It probably didn't mean much to a couple of hard rockers, but Khouri gave them access to the cream of the Caribbean's instrumentalists.
Trinidadian Trumpeter James Smart and saxophonist Enrique Moore joined them fresh from a session with calypso legend Mighty Sparrow. All that was left now was the vocals - except they still had no lyrics.

For years I assumed that Real Time was loosely based on Let's Dance by Bowie, but Greg Wilson later told me the bass riff was inspired by Cymande's Bra, so that's another one added to my Cymande musical family tree which is getting out of hand now

It was also caught on film for MTV. Sadly, or perhaps mercifully, the camera cuts away to a wide shot, and you don’t get to see teenage me in a silly furry hat and beads, but that’s my slightly off-key “naa-nana-na-nahs” around the 10 seconds mark, just before the shot of Earl Zinger nodding

Jus Reach Recycled also included an extra EP of live tracks which were still chart eligible. I was at the gig where they recorded them in 1992, and down the front when they passed the mic around during the chorus of Jus’ Reach. So this was the first time I appeared on a release, albeit very briefly

Although the above single wasn’t the one which charted (not @whatafuckingrecord.bsky.social’s fault, the Chart website doesn’t mention it was Jus’ Reach Recycled which came out in September ‘92). Jus’ Reach originally came out in 1991 (dated promo on the left) but didn’t chart.

I have a few DATs of Mick's unfinished album which he was working on before he died in 1994. Here's a snippet of How Can We Find Happiness. There were multitrack tapes but they've sadly disappeared. I've no idea who's playing on this one, but I played some percussion on a couple of other tracks

John Coltrane would've turned 100 today, and I'm still annoyed he didn't get to number 1 like Kate Bush off the back of this Stranger Things moment
Brett Gelman as Murray Bauman in disguise as Austin the delivery driver in Stranger Things. He's holding up the 1986 cassette reissue of A Love Supreme which he has hidden an engagement ring for Steve Harrington inside. It's not clear if Harrington ever listens to the album, but I'd like to see a spin-off series which follows Harrington as he gets involved in the late 80s jazz scene, rallying once more against evil, this time in the form of modern jazz production and digital restoration

It's Doug Wimbish's 70th birthday. Most know him from playing bass on many iconic Sugar Hill tracks, and his later work on various On-U Sound releases, but here's something funky from 50 years ago from Sugar Hill's pre-rap All Platinum label www.youtube.com/watch?v=44bB...

Sway supported Hard-Fi for a couple of nights during the 5 night stint at Brixton Academy in 06. He was a lovely guy, and played a blinding set rhyming over everything from Dead Prez to Blur. He got a nod in my Dubstack piece about those gigs a few months ago rentparty.substack.com/p/chapter-45...
Tuesday

Ambling along the corridor past my dressing room, I spotted the sign on Professor Green’s door which now read “Sway”.

Hard-Fi’s drummer Steve and I were both big Sway fans, particularly his verse on ‘Harvey Nicks’ by The Mitchell Brothers which conjured memories of my favourite UK chatters from back in the day like Smiley Culture and Asher Senator. He was on the lineup for the next couple of nights with a more focussed set than his predecessors; just him and his DJ Turkish, who attempted to win over the crowd by dropping in bit of Blur and the like, while Sway slipped in a few freestyles about the event itself. I’m sure the crowd was still split, but some of them definitely loved him.

Seeing as I've been sharing some old tracks I produced at the turn of the century today, here's some fuzzy old pictures of my messy old studio nearly 25 ago. Check the alt text for more details
My ridiculously messy studio circa 2003ish featuring various pieces of music gear with records and books haphazardly piled across them.

For the studio nerds, that's my Mac G3 in he background running Cubase. A Moog The Source beneath it, and a Fender Rhodes to it's right. Records which I can make out include Fly Like An Eagle by Steve Miller, the self titled Som Trés comp and a Def Con promo 12" which I'd guess was Paradoxes by Anglo-German hip hop duo Dark Circle. Yoda is sitting just behind Steve MillerAnother shot from my old studio circa 2003. On a desk on the left there's a small photo of my nephew, a copy of How Do You Catch A Girl? by Sam Sham & The Pharoahs, and a pot plant which probably needed some water. Next to them is my red Roland SH-101, and a Korg Sigma. Propped up against the wall below them is a Roland CPE-800 Compu-Editor. Yoda appears again in the bottom right corner, and that's the back of a canvas in the foreground which I'd guess is a painting my friend Jae One did for me.

On the wall is a poster for a night I put on called Weight.Another angle, this time from above because there was a mezanine floor which was effectively my office, though I wound up sleeping there for a few months.

This was what I guess you could call the control room. There's a 32 track Eurodesk (cheap but it did the job) behind me. A Technics 1210 next to the Mac. A rack to the right of the Mac housed my Akai S3000xl sampler and an ADAT. My bass is propped up against that, and there's a BBC sound effects album on the floor.

Someone saw this and scolded me for having such a grubby carpet. It's actually exposed concrete which looked horrible, made the place really cold, and was terrible for sound. It was a spacious warehouse behind a carpet shop where they used to keep their stock. We decked out what was previously their office with sound proofing and turned it into a live room where Greg Belson kept his drum kit, and a couple of early Hard-Fi drum tracks were recorded there

What did it sound like? Have a listen. I was on the periphery of the breakbeat scene, though I preferred electro-funk and UK garage, I had a thing for antiquated synths and drum machines, and I think that shows. Also the high hat shuffle is a nod to new jack swing.

Released OTD 25 years ago. 'Every Friday Night' by my group Ground Force. I got a call from a stockist later that day saying they'd had a complaint. A customer had seen the names of the remix artists and thought it was in poor taste less than a week after 9/11. The distributor shelved it soon after
A 12" of my electro-funk/breaks single 'Every Friday Night' by my group Ground Force. A black sleeve with green printed lines in thew style of vector graphics arcade games of the early 1980s like Battlezone and Star Wars. The Halflife website featured an animated version of the design by my friends Andy Matthews and James Watson. The centre of the Every Friday Night 12" showing the names of the remix artists Hightower Set (aka Greg Belson) and Suicide Bombers (my friend James Baines).
